I've had my SD for just over a year now. I'd been dreaming of getting one for a couple of years prior to that so I felt like a kid in a candy shop when I finally got it. This is my everything vehicle, including my daily driver. I love my truck and feel a great sense of personal pride in my SD ownership. Since joining FTE I have come across many people passionate about their trucks providing others with assistance or personal experience. I thought that kind of comraderie was felt throughout the community, but I'm beginning to change my tune.
The SD is not an unusual sight on the road, but definitely not a general purpose vehicle sold hand over fist like a Honda Civic. I felt this added a sense of exclusivity to our trucks since it did not attract the general buyer. I had visions of giving a friendly wave or head nod to passing SD's as a friendly acknowledgement to another discerning SD "brother" (much like motorcyclists and Jeep owners do). Since owning my truck and giving a friendly "what's up" to fellow SD's I see, I have been discouraged at my response.
Over the last year I've given the friendly wave to every SD I've come across (spark plugs or not, an SD is an SD). So far not one acknowledgement. It's disheartening to see people take for granted what I appreciate.
Maybe it's just a SoCal thing. Maybe it's because a lot of SD's I see have 10" lifts, 20" chrome wheels and ridiculous rubber that will never see any dirt (except maybe some creative parking at the park when they're running late for the kid's softball game). Maybe they look down on my stock truck (some of us want our rigs to last a long time), who knows. Maybe I'm being ridiculous and rambling over nothing. Mabye It's because I'm old school and remember when people were proud of what they drove.
Sorry for the rant. I guess I just wanted to see if it was like this everywhere else before I gave up being friendly.
Where im from, trucks still out number the civics and other cars like it. I give the hand up to all my super duty brethren as well. Usually get it back.
I think Steve is onto something with the urban/rural thing. A buddy of mine from New Jersey was riding around with me one day and after passing several trucks, waving and being waved back at, (I wave at all Ford trucks, most Chevy trucks, and occationaly a Dodge, but that's it....) he turned to me and said "You know all these people?" LOL!!! When I explained that is what you do "around here" he was floored. Said "You'd get shot for that where I'm from." (I had to peel him of the ceiling the first time I met someone head-on on a one lane, unmarked country road...the idea of getting off on the shoulder for the other guy was like a new religion to him, but I digress.)
However, when I drive up to D.C. to visit my in-laws, it's like I'm driving around with a big "Eff-U" sign on my truck the way everyone looks at me when I (out of habit) throw my head back or flash a wave. Hard to believe I'm in the same state (Virginia).
Around here is rural western MA and back home on Cape Cod, no waves aside from friends of mine with SD's. I owned a Jeep before this, and whether I waved or not, EVERY Jeep I passed would wave to me! Even the mail Jeeps.
it's most likely just the California thing......my city is a fairly small mountain town in AZ, and most of us wave to each other here. And if there is a weird look given......they might just get a little SMOKE cloud to choke on
I agree, rual areas are friendly where as urban is not. Most of time around here if I park I park next to a SD and they park next to mine. At least you know who dented your door

Yup, same here. My wife was puzzled by all the waving going on. She'd ask if I knew all these people. Just said nope, it's just a Jeep thing.
But to the OP, I get waves every once in a while. That said, if you wave to me in a SD, know you'll get one in return.
In the 8+ years I've owned my truck (5 years in AZ, 3 years in PA), I've noticed that I would only get waves from lifted trucks similar to mine. Maybe the guy driving the stock truck doesn't like the looks of my truck and doesn't wave back? I have no idea, but there's definitely NOT a camaraderie like there is when I'm on my motorcycle. Although there's always drama there too because some guys don't wave back. Whatever the case, I don't waste a ounce of thought on those that don't wave back.
Some folks buy a truck because they need 4 wheels and a bed, I bought my truck because I wanted one with the Ford name on it.
Everyone waves at everyone out here so I don't know if it's due to my SD or not, but I have noticed the jeep thing with my jeep almost everywhere I drive it, like riding a motorcycle.
