heck my town is small enough you dont just get a wave, someone might just call your momma and tell her they saw you out after dark....... And Im 42 years old. The first week after getting a new truck is great everybody waves then looks real close to see who they waved at.
When I lived in TN I had to learn to drive one handed with all the waves to the fellow SD/X owners. Just about everyone waved or returned the wave.
Now that I live in VA, it's like 50/50 margin.......Don't worry you'll get a wave from this SD driver!
All of California isnt bad but....I have lived near you in Orange County most of my life. It's the area where you live...too many people, I moved to West Tx (Canyon) 2.5 years ago and have never looked back. Everyone waves here and most people take the time to be friendly. Sell out and leave!
Great post btw.
I wave at most SD's and ALL lifted SD's on the road......but also park next to them with the thought that if they have a common interest in these trucks, they may take more care when opening their doors and leaving....because they don't want to hurt their baby no more than I want to hurt mine.
The question is, would you take the time to stop to offer help if one is stuck on the side of the road? To offer a tire plug for a flat, or at least offer to use your cell? I've done it and am also known to say(under my breathe) to the Mopar & Cheby boys...."sorry man, you should have bought a FORD".
Well in my town If I waved at every SuperDuty on the road I would never have my hands on the wheel, lol. Most of Wyoming as well, alot more trucks on the road than cars. Plus with all the oil field booming going on around here its nothing but oilfield trucks on the road, and 90% of those are Superdutys. Ill agree with the first post though, I do feel alot of pride when driving my truck, I hate driving with my buddys in there Chevys or Dodges, I feel more safe in my truck, cus I know there built alot better. Ill never drive anything but a Superduty, I am also more likely to wave to another superduty owners.
I too live in so cal...but I just think it depends on the other person...I think some people just don't know the rules! when I am out on my street bike you can tell who is the newbie and who has been around just by the fact of them waving back at you...unless it's a harley and some of those guys just think there too cool to wave back. back when I had my 66' mustang every hod rod on the road would give you a wave...but then again most people who drive rod's are old school and take pride in thier ride. my 2 cents...
Being in an urban area just outside of NYC, I find hit-and-miss. Some wave, some don't. The guy that lives around the corner that has an X waves too, I've never talked him, but nice to get a friendly hello on the way home from work.
Possibly the lack of response could by the "hating-thyself-for-driving-something-that-doesn't-get-great-mileage"
I also park next to fellow SD's and X's when I see them. I do have to admit we're the overwhelming minority.
A buddy of mine from New Jersey was riding around with me one day and after passing several trucks, waving and being waved back at, (I wave at all Ford trucks, most Chevy trucks, and occationaly a Dodge, but that's it....) he turned to me and said "You know all these people?" LOL!!! When I explained that is what you do "around here" he was floored. Said "You'd get shot for that where I'm from." (I had to peel him of the ceiling the first time I met someone head-on on a one lane, unmarked country road...the idea of getting off on the shoulder for the other guy was like a new religion to him, but I digress.)
where i am from in New Jersey just about everyone waves to everyone. Guess thats just the way we do it in the pine barrens...

Heck yeah, haha just a few weeks ago i was driving over to my girlfriends when some ATV guys wave me down they told me about some city folk stuck in the mud in a jeep just up the road, and as much as i hate these idiot city folk who go wheeling by themselves and think just cause there truck is a 4x4 means they can drive though anything(believe me they cant!!) i still pulled them out.
I am in MA also, and have never thought of waving to another SD. Not sure why, but for some reason it has always stuck with me that this is something done when the vehicle is "unique". Today, it seems that SD's are a dime a dozen around here.
In the late 80's and early 90's I drove a 77 Firebird Formula, with the distinctive double hood scoops, and every time another bird of the same vintage passed, we waved.
I do however yield to other SD's, let them cut in front of me etc much more frequently that I would to say a Dodge.
Jeeps used to be relatively unique, until the marketing made the yuppified, and the lawyers made them "safe", and the old CJ's would classify as unique.
Up here your just as likley to get shot if you dont wave - j/k. i get waved at by most SD owners and always return it - its like a club w/o the funky hat
I think it has everything to do with the area you are in and nothing to do with what you drive.
Take for instance when I go down to eastern TN where my wife is from; everyone throws their hand up when you pass them by, even the occassional farmer on the tractor.
I currently live sandwiched in between Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC and around here if you throw your hand up at someone, 9 times out of 10 they think you are cussing them out so you're likely to get flipped the bird rather than a friendly wave.
I'm originally from western PA (Go Steelers) and grew up in the country and nobody there throws up a wave either. I actually didn't experience that until I went to TN for the first time.

Not me. I went from a 5000lb F-150 2x4 5.4L that got 12mpg no matter what I did to a 7000+lb PSD 4x4 that get's 16-18mpg. Sure I pay a little more per gallon for #2, but I still come out ahead with my 33%-50% mileage increase depending on how frisky my foot is.

Maybe that's my problem. Possibly here in San Diego there's not as much brand loyalty as it is status. Kids will buy the first one they can afford to get it lifted so they need a ladder to get in. I can hear the drivetrain protesting and the ball joints and wheel bearings crying "uncle" as they go by. Now add the chip and the tranny is sweating to keep up. All of that rolling on stock brakes and you are asking for trouble. I'm just an old guy in a "lowly" stock rig who doesn't deserve the time of day. That's fine. 20 years from now I'll still be driving my stock rig loving it just as much as the day I got the keys and drove it off the lot.
You need to visit Texas some time. Its considered rude if you don't wave, especially
in the rural parts.
Don't think those CA liberals have any class, let alone manners.
