Finding tdc and removing dizzy

Im trying to remove the dizzy on my 351, and before i do so i want to get it to tdc. My haynes manual says to unplug the coil and ground it. how do i ground it? Also if i put a socket on the crank and turn it to get to tdc does it matter if i have the belt on the pulleys? my belt is off so i was wondering if i should put it back on. Im taking all of this apart to put in a cam and i want to do it right.
thanks
Jacob

Ground the coil wire by keeping it touching any metal part of the engine. I assume you are talking about the serpentine accessory drive belt, if so, forget about it. When finding TDC make sure the No.1 piston is on the compression stroke (valves closed). Good luck with the project. And don`t be afraid to post back from time to time with your progress.

Completely remove or ground the coil wire, take out #1 plug and have someone sit in the drivers seat to jog the motor with the starter while you hold a finger over the plug hole (making a seal with it) jog motor a little at a time until compression blows your finger off the hole. Once it does you know you have the compression stroke then use a wrench on the main shaft bolt to fine tune the piston's position. You can use a screw driver down the plug hole to feel the top of the piston as it moves slightly up/down while turning the main shaft by hand until you feel the exact top of its travel.
The rotor in the distributor will point at #1 plug wire.

I have the rotor under the #1 terminal but the blancer isnt quite to the zero mark?

Use the mark, when set on the 0 mark the rotor will or should be just slightly passed the #1 wire on the cap because of the base timing's setting to 10deg "advanced" setting. Slack in the chain may effect that as well as the actual timing setting it has if not set to 10deg BTDC mark.

Either way the 0 mark is top dead center, just be sure you are on the compression stroke. You can verify the 0 mark with the tip of a screwdriver down the plug hole, feeling the piston rise and fall as you rotate the main shaft one way then the other slightly from that point.

There must be something im not getting. I put a screwdriver in the whole and feel nothing, went a whole turn and nothing, i cant get a long screwdriver in there because its too tight. As long as it is pointing at the #1 terminal and the mark is on zero thats tdc on the compression stroke right?

With the rotor pointing at the #1 post on the distributor and the crank at the zero mark, you are at TDC.
