Sounds like a forward clutch failing. Also the 2001 had a problem with the Intermediate One Way Clutch (mechanical diode style) not operating properly.
The symptoms 99% of the time are delayed, slipping or no second gear problems. I don't know if you are aware of the TSB that was put out on it.
If you take care of it before too long, you still could get a lot of use out of that transmission. If you don't, there will definitely be a new transmission in your near future.
It certainly isn't the forward clutch. If that were failing it would slip in 1st gear, not during the 1-2 shift. It most likely is the mechanical diode failing. That's going to take a rebuild to fix.
Mine does it too. It has done it since I bought it. I don't have any clue why it does it, and its not really that noticeable most of the time. It only seems to do it at WOT so im not too worried about it.

Mark, I had the diode break on me. It didn't go into a failing mode. It just failed and burnt the fluid very quickly. Why was his going into a failing mode and mine was not. It just worked and suddenly it stopped working. No warning. One minute it was fine and when I stopped at the lights, it was fine. Took off and it felt like someone had hit the E-brake and it wouldn't shift past 2. Fluid got to 220 max but it was burnt. I felt that there was some point where it superheated but got cooled down before it reached the sensor I installed in the pressure port.
Not trying to dispute you but just wanting to know more. Thanx
The mechanical diode has several places where the inner race and outer race connect. Not all of them engage all the time. Sometimes one or two of the connectors break and it starts intermittently not working correctly. Sometimes more than the connectors break and the mechanical diode has a catastrophic failure. That's probably what happened to yours. There can be a lot of localized friction when it fails and that can burn the ATF without making the whole trans super hot.
