My 04 Escape was hit by a deer just between the tank lid and the rear light assembly. I figured, if I could get to the inside with a mallet I might be able to pound the bump back in shape.
However, I can't seem to remove the rear interior panels without breaking them. Does anyone have any idea how to take those darn things out? Is there any repair manual available that would help me out there?
Try using a toilet bowl plunger from the outside to pull it out if it's not creased. Here's a view of the left rear 1/4 panel from the inside. See if you can get to the damaged area before you disassemble it. ( Notice the fuel filler inside the square hole) The circled holes are where the trim panel snaps into place. You'll have to remove the weatherstripping from around that side of the hatch and the left rear door and the upper trim around the glass before removing the lower trim (if I remember correctly). It all snaps into place and I removed them from two vehicles without breaking anything.
See if you can send me your email address in a "private message" and I'll copy the procedure from the Ford manual and send it to you.
From Ford Motor Co. service manual. This is an '05 but the main difference is the seat back latches on the sides.(Illus.4) Not a lot of detail but maybe it helps.
Finally got the panels off, thanks for the drawing.
However, it didn't do any good. I could not pop out the sheet metal, very likely because of the crease in the fender. I trid to push it out with the head of a mallet but I produced only a bunch of small dents pointing outwards before I gave up. Guess the vehicle has to go the body shop.
