I am considering removing these horizontal braces and replacing them with a 14-16 ga "C" channel to make them flush with the rest of the interior braces. My thoughts are where the edges of the interior panel will be sticking out at the upper, lower, front and back edges unless I want to use a lot of fasteners. What are you panel owners thoughts and how did you handle this area? Pictures would be great.
Sorry I'm not near interior work yet but drsmith & 56panelford should have some input for you. FYI my avatar is of my Panel when I get it done NOT NOW.
The "rub rails" only came in standard panels as the custom cab panels had a finished interrior and they were not installed on the custom cab panels
You should be fine to remove.
Thanx Kevin I did not know that difference in the panel. With that info I think I will change up my design slightly and maybe only put one horrizontal in to keep the inside curve and save me some work.
It has been 8 years since I did my panel , So I am not sure how I did it . I had pictures of the build in my Gallery , But can't seem to find the gallery section now . I believe , I shimmed the vertical braces so they where smooth with the horizontal ones . I then used 4 inch wide wainscot boards , and screwed them into the vertical braces with stainless screws and washers . I then built a framework out of 3/4 angle and covered the wheel wells . This gave me a place for jacks and other tools and spares . For the roof I used 4x8 sheet of white plastic shower surround , Cut to fit it could be bent to match the roof braces . I did it in two sections for ease of handling . I glued fabric to the panels then screwed them to the roof braces .
I made my panels from 3/16" mahogany plywood, I screwed a 1/2" thick wooden spacer at the top. To fasten the panels I used those plastic push pins inserted in those side rails
