alright that gear vendors ive been talking about is now in and wired, but now i need an 18" shorter driveshaft. My truck came with the 8 foot bed and now i need to cut it down. my rig has a 2wd setup with the slip yoke driveshaft, going to a U-joint yoke. Could i somehow take off the slip yoke and cut/rebalance it?
also would an 8' 4X4 driveshaft possibly work since it is shorter because of the transfer case? that would be a good alternative.

a machine shop can cut out some drive shaft and weld it back together i had to shorten mine when i converted a long box drive train over to a short box fame
never done it myself, but ive heard if you use a tubing cutter (it does a pergect cut) you can shorten one. The yokes have a sleeve that fits inside the driveshaft tube attached. Weld it back straight & no need to balance. My source was building tubbed out street rods so our semi-mod trucks should be simmilar
You are correct, the yoke slips up into the driveshaft. The best thing to do is take it to a machine shop. They will put it in the lathe and turn down the welds and break loose the yoke, and drive it out. Then they will cut the driveshaft, and then press the yoke back in. They will then set it back in the lathe with a dial indicator and get it back straight, and then carefully weld it trying not to warp it. Then they will balance it.
It sounds complicated, and it is for a do-it-yourselfer, but it's common practice for shops setup to do it.
