Hmmm, if I recall they are a coarse thread phillips head screw. Tapered tip(self starting), whatever they call them. Seems they were like about 1 1/2" long?

353421S8 .. Phillips Head Armrest Screw-Truss Head / #14 -10 x 1 3/4"

No Ford or obsolete parts vendor has any.
----------------------------------------
BA7024146A .. Armrest Clip / 2 per side required.

Green Sales Co. (greensalescompany.com) has 100: 800-543-4959 or 513-731-3304
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The clips snap into the door panel, the screws thread into the clips.

You can get the same sized fasteners at a Lowe's, Home Depot or local Hdwe. Store. You may also be able to get the head style of your choice depending on how fancy your local Hdwe. store is....

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a McGuckin's.

Could be that someone re-assembled the arm rests with clips that were stripped out, so they used whatever size screw they had that would "bite" on a stripped out clip.

It's funny because my 1972 had 3/8 socket as well.

I replaced the armrest off of a 1985 Econoline, and it had the same 3/8 socket headed screws too.

Not saying it couldn't have been changed, but is it a coincidence for two trucks to be equipped with 3/8 socket?

3 examples out of how many 1964/72 F100/1100's assembled?

How many peeps here bought one a these trucks new, still owns it today?

I know of only one person. Guess who....

So there's no way you can say bolts were used as original, unless you bought one a these trucks brand new.

The armrest screws and clips are listed in the interior trim (upholstery) section along with the armrests.

I looked at 1971 first, then at every application beginning in 1961.

The parts catalog shows those same screws 353421S8 (and clips): 1964/72.

1973/79 F100/350: There's no listings for any armrest screws, or bolts, all it sez is improvise.

Econolines are listed and used a similar screw, at least thru 1979.

Some of the cars used hex headed screws, as one can see:

55917S .. Hex Headed Armrest Screw-Self Tapping / 1/4" -14 X 1 1/2"

The armrest clips were made out of thin sheet metal. If the screw was overtightned, they snapped.

So down to a dealer someone went, bought new clips and whatever the dealer sold them for screws.

Here's anudder example:

26578S78 .. Armrest BOLT-Round Head-Slotted / #12 -24 x 1 3/8"

Fits: 1957/63 F100/1100

Very true, and bolts and nuts and screws are usually changed quite often.

But it's very interesting that there are three examples of Hex headed screws being used, on three seperate F-series trucks, (Four total vehicles if you count the 85 Econoline which uses the exact same type of armrest) that it does make me curious as to why.

Econolines are listed and used a similar screw, at least thru 1979.
How long has the armrest screws for the 1967-1972 trucks been obsolete I wonder? Is it possible that somebody wanted to repair something in the doors, broke the original fasteners, went to the friendly ford dealer, asked for them, and the parts man says hey these for the late 80's Econoline works, here try them?

I know my friendly parts man at my local dealer... (Actual good friend of mine. His name is Bill too) will take the time and say, "I think this will work, let's check it out". ( how I know the float for a 1979 fuel sending unit will work in my 1981 quite well. )

Was it original? Was it improvising? It's enough to spark my curiosity anyway.

How about my 69, that still had the door panels glued in place? It had bolts. So did my 70 parts truck. So did my 72 parts truck. So does the 72 I am driving now. So does my 72 4x4. All lag screws, 3/8" head, that go into a clip on the door.
I use a deep 3/8 socket on a locking extension to remove these.

The screws might have been an update done later on.

Mine has 3/8" socket with a logo on the bolt head a capital letter M with a Letter T running up the center leg of the M,and by the way,the holes in the actual armrests, where the bolts go,are kinda ragged, like they have been removed or replaced several times....in the larger sizes,a lot of hardware stores probably have a better selection of hex head bolts than phillips head.....so is it likely that in the 36 plus years that these trucks have been around, its quite likely that most of them have had these bolts/screws replaced with whatever was at hand, and if the correct Ford part was discontinued,it shouldnt be a shock that few are still original

I looked initially thru several OSI catalogs before originally posting to see if the screws had been updated to another part number. Nope.

Because Ford updates 10's of 1000's of part numbers a year, I have to do this almost every time I post any part numbers, especially prior to 1980.

What year 353421S8 was obsoleted, I dunno.

I have a Standard Parts (Hardware) Catalog dated 2/2000. The screws are no longer listed.

In the Ford O-S-I (Obsolete-Supercede-Interchange) Catalog (on microfiche) dated January 1989: 353421S8 is shown as NR = Not Replaced.

353421S8 is not shown in the 1/1975 OSI catalog (bound paper), which means they were still available then.

In looking thru 5 * parts catalogs, there are prolly 50 (!!) different types of armrest screws/bolts used on cars/trucks: 1957 thru 1979.

* 1957/63 truck, 1964/72 truck, 1973/79 light truck // 1965/72 car / 1973/79 car.
