I’m looking at buying an ‘86 F 350 Dually 6.9 Ltr 4 SPD Crew Cab Diesel w/ Banks Turbo System, the current owner claims:
New Glow Plugs New Glow Plug Control Switch New Glow Plug Solenoid Both Batteries Are Warranted and Brand New
Does start and run but has a couple small fuel leaks that let air in the lines so it needs to be pull started (which we can do for you to prove it) until someone tightens the leaks. Once started, it runs and stays running.
I’ve driven but never owned a diesel and am looking for one to pull a 27’ travel trailer.
Do leaks in the fuel lines sound like a legitimate problem? If so how difficult would that be to fix? Also what else other than starter motor would cause a problem like this?
tjc is right. theres someone who sells a full kit to replace the return line injector o rings and caps. the full kit is only like 40 bucks and it will run well.
air in your lines can really be a bear to deal with im dealing with that right now its well worth $40 to replace and if your going to get a new starter i got a reman off ebay for $85 i get alot of idi parts off there cheap i may have to get an injection pump off there soon as well and its about 300 less than if i had to go to a parts store.o and also there is a starter solenoid on the passenger side fender well, atleast on my 7.3 thats where it is you could look into that as well.
fuel leaks are an issue alright but a diesel has to turn a minimum of 100 rpm to be able to start
it all has to do with compression
diesels are a compression ignition engine if it cranks too slowly the air is not heated sufficiently to cause combustion of the fuel when injected
i have seen far more diesels brought in for no start or hard starting due to battery, cables , or starter issues
yours is most likely the starter or cables
and i have seen so many people blame the glow plug system it isnt funny
thats why the current owner has thrown all of the glow plug parts at the truck trying to fix a problem that doesnt exist
without identifying the root cause
