Question about bench seat

This is my first post but I have been reading posts here for a month now. I have a 79 f150 4wd. I pulled the seat out bc it seemed to sag on the driver's side. One of the metal things that go from front to back is broken (sorry don't know wat else to call it). Could this be what is causing this or do you think the springs are just wore out? Should I just try to find another seat. I also have an 89 2wd I could swap em out but I kinda would like to use the original seat. Thanks in advance!

That sounds pretty common. I would swap it out for another seat. Any F series up to 97 (except 97 F-150) will fit but you might have to reuse your old seat tracks. Thats the part that bolts to the floor.

Sag is probably the springs. I am not sure what piece your are talking about going to front and back. You can reinforce the springs, or you can take the seat cover off and have some firmer replacement foam cut and inserted in your seat foam at your local auto upholstery shop. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Sounds like you have a busted seat track (the part that bolts to the floor/seat bottom). You can get them at the J-yard.

Also, I believe that bench seat from F-250's and 350's will work.
F-150: 73-96
F250/350: 73-97 (these trucks used the old body style till '98 or '99)

no one mentioned this but if you get a new seat out of a truck 1980+ you have to use the original track from our trucks...meaning....

take the seat from your truck off the track, then take the seat off the track of the other truck

take the new seat and put it on the track originally from your truck.

All good advice if the seat actually needs to be replaced, but the OP mentioned that "one of the metal things that goes from front to back is broke." This would indicate that the track is busted, so changing the seat with a newer one will be of no value.

Replace the track, and be sure that the cable is once again attached to the pass side, so the seat will slide, and you will have a functional seat again.

The track is fine. The part that is broken seems to support the seat. there are a bunch of them that attach from the front to the rear of the seat and run the length of the seat. i will try to post a pic sometime today. Thanks for all the advice

That would be the spring....They are s shaped front to back, correct. If one of your springs is broken as you mentioned it can also be welded back together with a mig welder. You can stiffen further by adding some wires across the width interweaving in between the springs, or you can get some off the passenger side of a donor seat and replace, or you can take the foam rubber and have a firmer support cut and put in place of the softer rubber found in your seat as I mentioned above. I had to weld up one of mine and it worked fine.
