Trying to determine if my '86 Ranger was made before or after 1/1/86 since apparently different cat converters were used before and after. Isn't there a thread for decoding VINs?
You should be able to find the build date on the sticker on the door or door jamb. I don't think the VIN has build date. There is a sticky here somewhere that has the 'decoder ring' information.
Look at the top in the 'technical' series.

Hey, how's everything in the Emerald Necklace? The 'mistake by the lake' is a good ol' town. NavFinCen was my last duty station, 1240 e 9th??
Anyway, get out your camera and take a picture of what you have, and waltz it down to your parts place. Or take the VIN and visit your Ford dealer, and ask what the replacement OEM part # would be.
NumberDummy on this site could answer your question directly, most likely. He has numbers in his head... and they fall out onto his keyboard a whole lot

The 11th position in the VIN Code ( a letter with numbers before and after it) will give you the model year. If your truck is an '86, the code should be "G." However, that will not give you the build date. Your dealer should be able to give you that fro the last letter and the last 5 numbers in the VIN. Good luck.
