The wiring harness is different, all the way back to the regulator.

I swapped a 77 idiot light harness to my 74 guages. I can tell you for sure that it was a pain. I have the diagrams and notes somewhere, but the bottom line is that they both have the same amount of wires. Where they go in the plug is different, and the plugs are different.

It was cool, but looking back, I would have rather put in aftermarket guages.

It's easier to swap out the main harness in your dash, for one with Gauges, than it is to re-wire your Idiot light harness to accept gauges.

And if you re-wire the Idiot light harness wrong, it can be a fire hazzard. As one member here found out. Search for ammeter shunts.

Aftermarket is by far the easiest way to go.
