Auto Start
Are the aftermarket autostarts any better then the ford model.
Im going to the dealership tomorrow, and thought I would ask them about the Ford autostart and see how much it is to have it installed.

I would say to get the Ford unit simply because you are under warranty. If you get an aftermarket one done, they might possible void your warranty by butchering the job.
Put up the price though. I'm interested in a Remote Start / Alarm now myself.

from all the vechicals i've seen the OEM unit is always the best system for durablitiy. but you can get alot of other aftermarket systems out thier for alot cheaper and have better features like alarm two way paging etc. if you are confondent at wiring you can install lots of them your self and often at Future Shop you can get a Viper system with start, alarm, two way pager, keyless, starter kill, fuel pump kill, etc for under 500 installed, just watch the sales you can cheaper ones if you dont want all these features
I have had Viper systems and never had any issues with them, I installed a viper alarm with keyless in my civic worked great and simple enough install with proper wiring diagrams

I have the ultra remote starter and have no problems at all, I installed myself. It is not hard at all with the wire diagrams showing colors and location. Picked it up on Ebay along with the bypass for under 70 bucks. You also get a blue LED antenna that you mount just under the rear view mirror, it flashes when locked and I can see it from over block away.

If you were to get a Autostart what are the options that would be the best, you talk about 2 way paging and stuff like that.
The only thing that I know I want is 1 fob I dont want a pocket full of key fobs, and for it to start. Alarm may be nice but ford already has the stock alarm, so what would be the difference. Does the ford models offer any of those options?
When it comes to all the other stuff im clueless. I know some of them even state a farther distance that you can start it from. 1000ft 2000ft ???

2 way means the remote talks with the vehicle. You tell the vehicle to start...and after starting, the vehicle will send a signal to the remote and there is a little display that will show the vehicle is running...or locked, unlocked..etc
any aftermarket alarm setup will replace your key fob. I still am a fan of the OEM setup. It is identical to the FOB you have currently...but the OEM stuff doesn't have the longer range and cool features an aftermarket setup does.
An alarm is nice, and totally different from the Factory alarm. My Durango has shock sensors, glass sensors, door sensor, hood sensor...blah, alot of sensors. The factory unit only cares about the door opening, and vehicle running.

Ditto to what he said just decied on how much you want spend and what features you need or want... here is a link to the viper alarm/start system retails for 600, but you can find them cheaper i've seen them for 500 installed more then once

Installing an aftermarket vs. the stock is really no different. Many people mistakenly think that the stock units are plug-n-play...they're not. You have to cut and splice as many wires with the factory ones as you do the aftermarket ones. When I installed DEI units in two of my cars I used the Ford Technical manual. Be warned if you decide to do it yourself: it's a big job that takes alot of pre-install research and patience. Some of the wiring harnesses have the same color wires intervating them with the only difference being gauge. A 20g and 22g wire look real similar when your laying on your back under the dash.

I bought an '08 in August and had the Ford Remote Start unit installed at the dealer before I took delivery. Why? Because, as stated above, it is then part of the new vehicle warranty. Cost was about $250. Works like a charm! On my '05 I had an aftermarket remote starter unit installed....Crimestopper.......and it worked well; however, I never knew that by installing an aftermarket unit you in essence will void the warranty should any problem occur that could be traced back to that unit. That enough was the reason I bought the Ford remote start when I bought the truck. Absolutely no problems with it. Good luck!

Checked with dealer on this and they had 2 models.
1. Quick install which I would have another smaller fob that would just start the vehicle.
$377.50 +tax includes labor.
2. Full blown install i guess you would call it.. included a remote that would start the vehicle but would also include the remote entry buttons and panic buttons. which is like I have now, but only with a additional button for the remote start. One Fob $507.50 + tax includes labor
apparently 2.5 hours for the quick install and 3.5 hours for the other to get it set up.
