My wife's 03 Explorer's cel light came on tonight on her way home from work. I have a cheapy code reader and it threw code: 0430 Problem is, I have no idea what it means, as I've lost the manual. Anyone with any insight to this?
No offense, but I have been on this site for almost 5 years. I know how it works. The link to the trouble codes does not work. Hence the question here. So if you don't mind, I'd prefer the question get answered here. It is a forum after all. You obviously don't have the answer either?
Even if I did look up the trouble code: P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2) I'd only be making a guess at what it means anyhow...I'd assume it's probably an O2 sensor. So please before you go making posts that aren't of any help to the poster, do me a favor and don't post if you can't help me on what I'm after.
Which I assume means the whole cat would have to be replaced? I've never ran into having to have that done, is there a way to pinpoint if that is the exact culprit?
In an effort to not get taken advantage of what are some good things to ask the dealership when I take it in tomorrow for a real diagnosis of the problem? How do I know they aren't just trying to jack me out of paying for a new cat when all it could be is the sensor?
My information is that your code means either the cat is bad, the oxygen sensor is bad or you have an exhaust leak. The exhaust leak should be reasonably easy to eliminate. As far as the other two are concerned the only way is to check the voltage output of the sensor to see if it is faulty. One other thing to look into is that there might be a 5 year warranty on emission stuff. Also it should not alter the driving of the car so another option is to do nothing. Hope this helps.
Here's a crazy question for you all. Could this code have come from just a clogged air filter? The reason I ask is this: I crawled under there yesterday (first unhooked the negative battery post to clear the code) removed the aft O2 sensor, cleaned it and reinstalled it. I then proceeded to do some other maintenance like change the air filter (very very dirty). Hooked the battery post back up. Took it to fill er up with gas. Drove it about 100 miles today and no code popped back up. Could it really have been something as simple as the air filter? I highly doubt it's even possible...but who am I to know these things? I'm just a weekend warrior trying to save a buck.
