is it possible to manually activate the overdrive via a panel mounet switch perhaps? my overdrive does not kick in until i hit aprox 41mph i would like it to kick in a little sooner sometimes to save gas. what do you guys think? truck is 1996 f150 4r70w 4x4
would you ride around in 5th gear at 30-35 mph in a stick?
I do it all the time...don't have to give my Mazda much gas to cruise at 30-35 in 5th. There's no ability to accelerate, but it's not lugging the engine, either.
Both my trucks go into O/D at 45mph, and then back out when I drop below that point.
Yea you could rig a switch easy enough to lock it in O/D but I don't know, be more work turning it on and off all the time then it be worth I'd think. Unless you drive for miles every day, at a steady speed just a mile or two below that shift point and rarely have to stop.
All the Ford trucks like ours with overdrive automatics that I have been in shift into OD at about 40 mph. That is if you are just cruising along barely accelerating. If you acclerate it may not shift into OD until 45-55. It may be slightly different since yours is an F250.
40-45 MPH sounds right to me. Mine (an AOD, not a 4R70W, mind you) will upshift to OD at about 40 under light throttle, so normally I drive in "D" -- not "OD" -- around town because it tends to shift too much in city driving.
In fact, keeping it out of OD in town has actually helped my city mileage ... odd, I know, but I have a feeling it's because I'm not "lugging" the engine as was suggested earlier, but rather keeping it in the "right" RPM range for in-town/suburban speeds.
