I have a 2002 7.3 F-350 cc long bed 4x4,I went to glamis this weekend and went to put the truck into 4x4 and everything looked good the 4x4 hi light came on but come to find out after I got stuck four times it was never in 4x4,it is not shift on the fly,it has the shifter on the floor,I tried putting it in nuetral and backing up and still nothing,we went to look if the hubs were locked and noticed it had caps covering the locks, does it need to be locked on the hubs,I was thinking that the guys who lifted the truck before i bought were retards and put the wheel caps over the locks, anyways any help would be appreciated.
Tear them apart, clean them, and regrease them. They work off vac so the vac like might be disconnected to one side or another. Put it into 4x4 while jacked up (Not safe idea in a building) and put into gear to see what hub is not working. You can see the axle spinning behind the tire. Only one side will probaly want to spin because of the locker but this should help you out. Guzzles has a topic on here how to clean the hubs. Just search Guzzles hub repair and you should find what you are looking for.
When you put it in 4x4 does your climate control default to defrost? If so you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Look at the rubber lines going to the back of the spindle assy to see if it is deteriorated. More than likely they will need to be replaced. I would also take the center caps off and see if you have the factory hubs or aftermarket. If you have aftermarket hubs you will have to lock them in manually when you want 4x4.

You've got manual hubs. The hubs need to be locked in by hand before you can use 4x4 or 4lo.
twags6 is correct. You have manual locking hubs. You need to pop the caps off and lock them in. They have caps that are open for 4x4's. Depending on what manufacturer and style, some leave a bit to be desired in the looks department. A buddy of mine used a rotozip on his plastic centercaps and they look pretty good. He took his time, and put two coats of clearcoat to stop the plastic "chrome" from peeling at the cut edges.
How do you know I have manual locling hubs is it because of the transfer case shifter on the floor? Also thank you very much for all your help guys its really appreciated.
