that i can understand. stanadyne won't be found at the ford dealer, although you might have to go even farther out of your way for it.

i used diesel kleen, and liked the way it ran, and got a noticeable mileage improvement, but when my blackstone report came back with fairly high levels of fuel, i switched to see if maybe that was part of the problem. still experimenting there, but it's getting close to time to pull another sample.

Thumbs down

My attitude is changing as a result of this thread. I deep down thought the standard for CETANE in over the road fuel was 45. Yesterday I wrote to Flying J and their answer follows. I did send them a follow up question, which if they answer, I will post:

QUESTION:

Can you devulge the CETANE rating for ULSDF, 15 ppm maximum that you sell in
the STATE of GEORGIA?

I have a FORD 6.4 diesel and buy from your stations regularly.

ANSWER:

Cetane can vary in the US from 40 to 55, depending on the refinery making
the diesel.

Most diesel moves via pipelines across the United States, and minimum
pipeline specification is 40 Cetane.

We do not test for Cetane, so I am unable to state the exact Cetane at the
location in questions.....or than it meets minimum US and manufacturer
specifications.

Thanks for your inquiry and for being a customer.

Ryan - What is a "blackstone report"?
Yesterday I purchased Diesel Kleen and still need to drive about 100 more miles before I fill up. I will try at that time.

Thank you for taking the initiative in contacting Flying J. That was some very insteresting news you found out. That helps me feel a little better about the $20 I spent yesterday on the Diesel Kleen (not that $20 will kill me but I do not like dropping $20 on something that I might not need)

Since I am posting again - thanks to everyone for their comments. I am going to try the Diesel Kleen and see what happens then I will try another manufacturer's.

In summary this post has convinenced me to use an additive and that was one of my goal's of posting the question. Now with experimentation, I will see what works best for me.

blackstone is a company that does oil analysis, usually engine oil, but they also do transmission, etc. they tell you the levels of different materials in your oil, and can suggest when you may have impending problems. found out about the company right here at FTE.

i'd never seen a posted cetane rating until i went up north, at least in NYS every pump is marked "minimum cetane rating 40" or "40+". which i find sorely disappointing. hence why i'll stick with using an additive of some sort to get it back up there a bit.
