LETS GET IT STRAIGHT....bicycles CAN ride in the road There IS a "THREE FOOT RULE" that cars HAVE to obey.....meaning that cars have to give bicycles 3 feet of space and it doesn't matter where the bike is.
Before you get too high and mighty you might want to consider that the VAST majority of roads are funded thru gasoline tax. Not too many cycling dollars go to road construction & maintainance.
No but bicyclists do usually pay federal and state taxes as well as sales tax. All these are tapped for building and maintaining roads as well as the gas tax. I pay gasoline tax every time I mow my lawn or cut firewood so I may as well ride my bike and make good use of that money. Bicycles do alot less damage to roadways than the automobile as well.
I dont mind slowing down and then going around a bike rider. But when they try to get in front of everyone at lights and pass between cars Im tempted to open my door and let them hit it. It would be their fault because opening the door isnt illegal. I wonder how people wold feel if I were to ride a donkey cart on the public highway. Since becoming a third world country and a third world culture right here in the USA is popular now a donkey cart would fit right in........cant descriminate you know.
Donkey cart sounds an idea. If you use the donkey cart to haul firewood that you cut with a gas chainsaw you paid your highway taxes. I just hate to imagine where the catalytic converter goes on that poor donkey.

Come on up here in PA for a visit - don't have many donkey carts here, but perhaps once a week or so I either follow a horse & wagon down the road or see one coming in the opposite direction. The local supermarket has a hitching rail for them. Don't seem to bother most motorists around here, me included.
thats the other thing that bugs me is when motorcycles split lanes...when i see them coming i get as close to the next car as i can....
When we went to France last year it is legal to do this and they weave in and out of traffic at high rates of speed,I was scared just watching them and I ride. After spending a few days in Paris and watching thousands of motorcycles ride this way and I did not see one wreck simply boggled my mind,if they came over and tryed that they would be killed the first thousand yards or better due to a driver being pissed off at the way they are being passed.
I don't mind sharing the road with bikes. I especially respect the ones that follow traffic signals and use the turn lanes...etc.
What I don't like are cyclists who use the road then disregard the signals and get on the sidewalk to ride through an intersection in the pedestrian crosswalk. If you want to take your bike in the crosswalk, get off and walk it. "WALK" means just that. It doesn't mean ride your bike 30 mph, run or flip your skateboard in the air and fall off in the middle of the intersection.
In my state at least, it is illegal to open a door into traffic. Meaning you can do so if it is safe. But if another vehicle, motorcycle or bicyclist hits your door you are 100% at fault.
the trun lanes are the biggest problem...why are they out there? they have no business being there, they slow done the cars, and in many place cause many cars not to get through the signal.....why cant they just cross the stree like all other padestrians?
If someone is breaking the law they should be arrested.....bicyclists, cars pedestrian etc.
I've never seen a cop arrest a bicycle rider because he knows they r at a serious disadvantage.
When a bike goes up against a car the biker loses.....period.
I've NEVER heard of a motorist getting HURT in a bicycle/car accident.
Also, it's NOT agaisnt the law in arizona for me to pack my .44 ......I carry a lot of things.
The bottom line is that most people don't want to deal/yeild to a bicyclist. They think that the biker should not be there and should get off the road.
Read the laws you might be surprised what is written.
JUST REMEMBER THAT "THREE FOOT LAW".
Click, snack, lock.
Brady tread lightly in this murky water you have stirred up! I was a very strong proponent in the last one. 1st last time i was in cali, now admittedly that was 15 years ago, lane splitting was legal which makes you the richard, in the crowding the lane closed issue!
Jake i am not completelty certain but i do believe at least in Illinios legislation has been passed about the 3 foot rule, it was brought around by the league of illinios bicyclists or something to that effect. I know it was pork added to another bill, but i believe it is now law.
Now for the record i finally gave up bicycle commuting, to many ignorant aholes with little knowledge of the laws, i had more than my share attempt assault with there cars. of course might have had something to do with me and my mouth, i dont back down when i am within my rights by law. the thuggette pulling a gun on me over it was also a big factor.
As a general rule in almost every city state, county etc, in lieu of designated bicycle paths, a bicyclist has all the rights and responsibilities as any other motorist. in other words they are intitled to as much of the road as you are. That being the case i would suggest a little understanding when the biker rolls past you to the "pole position" at the light, unless of course he is using his right to the entire lane, and really holding you back. you can just squeeze the throttle so slightly and you have passed, the biker is working pretty hard to get through a light from 5-6 cars back. bottom line it takes a little courtesy from all of us to share the road, and no matter what happens when you run him over, via your aggression and ignorance, or there lack of courtesy and stupidity, you are gonna feel horrible. and for the record those pri.... that ride in a big club, and refuse to single up to let cars pass, well eff them! Even i hate them and take every opportunity to make it clear to them. yea they are entitled but it is an understood courtesy for the sake of good will that you single up, and keep the social stuff for when no one is around.
dont worry Brady i still think you are allright, just use a little consideration and courtesy, and if they dont show it back, well screw them! Dan
hmmm that 3 foot rule is interesting...seems a bit agresive just because many times there is not an extra 3 feet on the road....
the few cyclists that follow the rules stay to the right and all that i think are great, more power to them. and i dont care if a biker goes past me at a red light as long as they dont take up the whole road.
what i dont get are these bikers that think because the law is on their side they can do what ever, for me the rist of getting hurt is just to much of a risk for me, even if i am within the law. like someone else said when a cyclist and a car meet the cyclist losses no matter who is at falt...
theyhave as much of a right to be there as we do, since its prohibited to ride on the sidewalks....i cant even see where this is an issue in regards of a 3 foot rule or a 20 foot rule, they are pedestrians......the proper thing to do is to is to show as much courtesy as possible to them, regardless if there taking up the road or not.......even the tour defrancers that we have here try to stay out of the road as much as possible. in todays day in age where as drivers think tey own the roads, texing on cell phones...etc....its really sad that majority of people have the get out of my way attitude on the roads....its seen everyday. its actually pathetic that a driver gets frustrated over this, and displays his arseholeness by showing impatience to a biker, when in reality, you may have been held up 45 seconds out of your precious day
theyhave as much of a right to be there as we do, , they are pedestrians......
ok if they are pedestrians then they CANNOT be in the road, now if they want to be in the road then fine but i will show the same reaction to them as i would to a car doing what they are doing. and if a car was going 10 MPH on a 50 MPH road i am giong to honk at them and same goes for a cyclist.
what part of YOU CANT RIDE A BIKE ON A SIDEWALK are you missing...obviously they arnt motorists---hence bike that has no motor. and since when cant i walk along the side of the road? you have never been on a road that no sidewalk?
