Flakey gas gauge

I have a 97 F350 4X4 CrewCab with a 7.5L (460). The gas gauge is a little flakey when on the front tank. The gauge will sometimes work and sometimes not. I have even had it start off working, die, then start working again in a short drive. Most of the time it doesn't work. But the fact that it works at times tells me that it is likely a bad ground or electrical connection versus a bad sending unit.

Can anyone point me to where I should start looking for the ground connection problem?

You said when on front tank so that tells me you have twins tanks if the rear is working fine it is likely at the tank bung. road sand and salt get up there and corode the conections. It's 50/50 on if theres enought metal left to fix it or if it will just crumble in your hand, as you remove to clean most of the time.

For most of us its the fuel pump wires 1st that give us trouble.

44,
whats the best way to get at those wires? Do I have to drop the tank?

Its probably the sending unit in the tank. Mine did this a several years ago. It turned out that the float had a pinhole in it so it would sometimes work and somtimes not.
