There really aint any safety reasons, my Dad used them when he was racing, I used them when I raced. Neather had any problems, just dont get two wide of spacers. Make sure your lug are long enough and makes sure they are good and tight.
I've run a set of 1 1/4" on my Toyota Tacoma for the last 4 years. Check'd every 6 months, never any problem with loosening. I install them with blue loctite, torque to 85-90 ftlbs. Only problem is if they are not torqued in the correct star pattern I get a slight vibe at highway speed.
Worst part to me is the fact that there is now a hidden set of lug nuts. Another thing that could fail. It's always in the back of my mind that I could have a loose / broken lug and not know about it. But I've wheeled the crap out of the truck with no problems.
I was thinking of using wheel spacers to make the rear track width as wide as the front. So I to am looking for some recamendations, a good brand and how wide. The truck is a 87 F-350 4wd crew.
Go to evans detailing page. He’s the metal polish god. Sells the same products he uses. Best in the buisness. For some reason it won’t let me upload a link for web page.

Sorry for the hijack
I used 2" spacers on my '97 F350 4X4. Now the rear track width is in line with the front and it no longer looks like I'm dog-tracking. Also, the wider rear tread width looks better with my fender flares. I've had them on for over 100K miles...no problems...I check them for tightness when I rotate the tires...never a loose lug. I don't remember what brand they were...cost maybe 150 bucks/pair a decade ago.
I put 1 1/2" spacers on a 95 E-150. Stock rear track width is 3" narrower, to accommodate sliding door apparently - which I don't have. Looks much better.
