How about Thornbirds???

Has anyone ever used Super Swamper Thornbirds. I'm in need of new tires and I can get a really good deal on a set of 38x14.5x16.5. I would just like to know how these perform. I do mild offroading and drive about 10,000 miles a year. Truck is a 1991 f250 4x4. Right now has 35" TSL. Any replies would be appreciated.

That's what I had heard too, just wanted to see if others heard the same thing. I think I will just ask Santa for a new set of TSL's.

the super swamper thornbirds are basicaly an agressive looking all-terrain tire. they suck in the mud. not sure how they do on the highway or on the rocks/dirt. id go with any of the tires on the TSL line (tsl/sx, tsl, or tsl radial).
'75 F-100 4x4, 4" lift
35x15.5x15 super swamper TSL/SX
mini-spooled 9" rear end
390 w/ cam,headers,
and 4 barrell edelbrock

TRIED TRUE and FORD BLUE

How about Thornbirds???

my friend has a set of these thornbirds on his ton diesel and they are the most horrible riding tires i have ever seen, i have a set of tsl radials on my truck and they ride fine, as far as off roading they arent much i would stick to a tsl

Thornbirds are nice looking, but dont work. The reason you can get a good deal is because they suck.

86 F250 4x4,4.10 gears,4 speed, 10.25 rear, dana 50, 460, weiand stealth, edelbrock 750, heddman headers, 36" super swampers

How about Thornbirds???

I went four wheeling last year to a two day event. The first day out i was running my 35 inch bfg mud terrains. Truck was ustoppable, they performed flawlessly, dug like crazy for every inch, and never got stuck. That night i'm sitting in my campsite with the guys from the next one enjoying a cold one or two and the guy mentions that he has an extra set of thornbirds on rims that will fit my truck and that i'm free to try them out tommrow if i want to. so the next morning i bolt them on and yes...the truck looks kick *** with them. but as soon as i hit the trails i hated them. the dug straight down every time i hit any mud, which wouldn't be a bad thing if i just wanted my truck to sit there, but the things wouldn't move the truck through anything. THEY SUCKED, at lunch i put my mud terrains back on and was much happier after lunch. Lesson learned, the cool looking tire didn't work, stick with something other than that...anything other then them.

How about Thornbirds???

WOW! A bunch of people with opinions different than I. I have had mud terrains and also the thornbirds, and would never go back to the M/T. I have had my tires for almost a year and a half, not much wear and I love the traction. It was my daily driver until I put in the mini-spool last week. 40 miles a day for a year and a half on the highway plus all kinds of off-roading. I take it to the Mud Bogs, and they work great. I would agree with poor driveability on the highway, but I wanted off-road tires no matter the consequence. The noise doesn't bother me, I actually kind of like it. The tires do love to dig - I have never gotten into trouble because of it though. If my tires didn't dig, I wouldn't want them. I like tires that will move the dirt or mud. Maybe it is just because of a lighter truck. My buddy has a 3/4 ton Dodge, same Thornbirds, and his wear faster. It depends on your application. I did notice you only do mild off-roading. You probably aren't looking for something like a Thornbird.

Hope you can understand all of my thoughts jumbled into one paragraph.

Leave all those crap tires where they belong... In the mud.
Get the Pirelli SCORPION A/T !

Tire description
On the road or off-the road, under ideal conditions or a torrential downpour, Scorpion A/T gives consistent superior performance.
Aggressive tread pattern with specialised compound for gruelling off-road excursions. Robust structure designed to take punishment, but at the same time giving exceptional handling on road, where the driving comfort and low noise can be really appreciated.
Scorpion A/T is the symbol of Pirelli technology, enhancing the freedom of four-wheel driving.

Tread pattern
Heavily blocked tread pattern with extensive siping and broad central channel.

I use the SCORPION S/T and will never use anything else! These are the best tires you can get! They are a bit more $$ but are worth every penny.

Those Pirelli's look almost as aggressive as the tires on my wife's car.

I think you could get stuck in wet grass with them things.
