Help!!! T18 or T19 questions

I have a 1985 F350 4x2 rollback. It's a 4spd manual tranny that needs to be replaced. Im looking for a used trans. I'm trying to figure out what other years did this trans go into? Also, if I find a 4x4 tranny, will that work, and what will the mechanic have to do match it up.

Anybody have one they're trying to sell ASAP?

AFAIK, the T19 was available in F350's as early as 1969, & the T18 in lighter trucks from earlier on. But there are several different versions of both T19's & T18's...........and also an I.H. version to avoid.
A 4wd trans can't be used without converting the tailshaft.

Have you considered having it rebuilt? It couldn't cost much.

The T19 of this era only came in 460 and diesel powered trucks. Anything else had a T18 or NP435. The NP has an aluminum top cover, The T18 has a cast iron cover both with PTO on the Pass side, The 19 has a synchronized 1st gear, iron cover and dual pto ports.
Shifter retainer is screw on on the T18/19, push down and 1/4 turn on the NP.
You are going to need a 2wd trans, but, the T18 and NP435 are both pretty common, If you have the 19 I suggest having yours re-built as they are kind of rare. You can swap in either of the other two, but the useable first gear is very nice.

I'm curious if I have the 18 or 19, too. Thanks for the info. Is it safe to assume that I've got the 18 because I pretty much have to be stopped to get it into 1st without grinding the hell out of the gears? I'm not sure if that's what synchro means.

Thanks again,

Dan

T-19 introduced in 1973 F350 / T-18 introduced in 1965 F100/250 2WD & F350.

OP's 1985 F350 2WD could have either a T-18 or T-19.

OP: TRANS code printed on the Certification Label, post what it is.

A non-synchro transmission (or a non-synchro gear in an otherwise synchro trans) is like this, such as the T18.

But you could also have an NP435, which was a similar trans......4-speed, non-synchro on low gear.

Easiest id is that the T18 has a cast iron lid, while the NP435 has an aluminum lid.

This thread suggested that the NP35 wasn't used in 92. Is that incorrect? I haven't found anything more definitive.

Both were used together for several decades , but NumberDummy would know what year the NP435 finished.

If you look on car-part they suggest 87 could have had a 4 speed or a 5 speed, but 88 up only the 5 speed. That's for the heavy trucks. Your one post says you have a f150. Totally different tranny selections for f150's compared to the f250's/350's. That might be what is confusing your search. This thread started out with a f350.

The OP has a 1985 F350 2WD, uses a Warner trans. If the OP had an 1985 F350 4WD, it uses the New Process 435 trans.

Yes and no, no matter 2wd or 4wd, if that F350 has a 460 or 6.9 it has a T19, it was engine specific rather than truck configuration specific.
If it is 300 or 351 powered there is no chance of a factory installed T19, outside of that your formula may apply, my experience with 2wd non 460/diesel manual trucks has been limited to all 300 powered trucks 80-86, which outside of my F100's all had NP435's from the factory, both 2wd and 4wd.
I have only ran across one T18 in an 87 2wd 300 powered F150.

I would just climb underneath; they're easy to distinguish.

I just acquired a 1992 f150 reg cab long bed 4x4 t18 behind a 300. His for sale post said zf5 and I was excited but still not disappointed to learn they're hard to find with the straight 6. My truck doesn't grind 1st too bad at all compared to my old sm465 in my 88 2500. My hope is to add a leaf or two and put a 1700# 30' boom lift in the bed and find some 250 emblems to keep the law off me
