powerstroke swap?

Hi, I have a 91 F350 with the NA 7.3. The motor has almost 400,000 miles on it and is getting very tired. Instead of rebuilding it, I want to swap a newer Powerstroke into it. I can get one from a wrecked 97 e350, the motor is complete, with harness and trans for $1000. I have a very good knowledge of automotive systems, etc. It should be a pretty straight forward swap, I'm just looking for any advice, or problems with the swap, wiring, cooling, etc, thanks

I have ford wiring diagrams for both trucks, there should only be about 15 wires I would have to solder and shrink wrap to joint the 2 harness together to make everything work.

Are the motor mounts the same? Modifying moter mounts could be a PIA if they are not already the same.

I am also interested in this swap!

the motor mounts should be the same cause the blocks are similar if not the same but everything else is different

cool.thats a fun thread to follow.thanks LK.
it seems like this would be a pretty straight forward swap.

Boostmonkey,
the injectors and IP could likely be more tired than your actual internals of your IDI.
a few questions:

1.whats the compression look like?

2.how many miles are on the IP & injectors? -- this one fools a lot of folks about the IDI's power.these are ware items, and if not changed regularly (say every 100k to be safe, since our parts are so low cost compared to other diesels, and with fuel being so expensive, its a good rule of thumb these days.not to mention the ULSD fuel today.) the IDI feels like a dog.
those who went way to long on IP's and injectors and finally changed them, know just how drastic this can be.

3.when was the last time you had the engine timed?

the N/A IDI should set you firmly in the seat when coming onto it wile empty.nothing like today's diesels of course, but it should make you grin a bit.if not,a compression check is in order.
the only time the IDI should be slow,is under load while going up a good grade.even then,if you make her talk (up around 3k) before you get to the grade, this helps a lot, because this is where her max HP is.HP is your momentum.the IDI is lacking in this department, and why they slow down so much up hills.
don't be afraid to make her talk.she has a governor, and won't over rev beyond the safe zone.it won't hurt anything but your economy.but when your working it,you want her to keep going for ya lol.

I have a chugging sound coming from the exhaust, and # 3 cyl is low on compression, I'm thinking it is a burn ex-valve, I pulled the covers and was hoping to find a broken rocker or spring, but everything was good. Up til the chugging began, it ran good but used a quart of oil every 1500-2000 miles and 394,000 miles on it. Its on injection pump #4, i changed about 26,000 miles ago, #3 was a victim of ULSD. The van motor only has about 70,000 miles, so if I add new injectors, UVC harness, and glow plugs, It should outlast the truck.

Beware tho, at about 100k miles on a powerstroke is when everything that is going to fall apart starts to fall apart. Not to say that all are like that, but the three that we have had have been that way. I love mine. It has 218K tho.
