05 xlt 5.4 extended cab. Well today I thought I would lock in the 4 wheel drive while it was raining just to make sure every thing is working ok. Well flipped the switch and nothing happen the hubs didn't lock transfer case didn't shift. thought it was the vacuum solenoid but it wasn't that. I have the updated solenoid with the rain shield my old one was still good when I replaced it so just stuck it in the spare slot on the new bracket for a backup in case the new one goes bad. Anyway I shifted in to neutral to try 4 low then every thing starts to work again. I try to cycle my 4 wheel drive system once a month to make sure every thing is working and to keep it lubricated.
Could there be a problem with the digital transmission range sensor or should I be looking somewhere else? could even be a fluke not happen again.
positive it didn't shift mine always made noise when the hubs engage mainly just a click or clunk usually here the transfer case shift in to more so in 4low than 4high indicator lights didn't come on ether.
I don't drive it 4low on pavement just was just trying to get it to shift in any 4x4 gear I'll drive it in 4high on very wet pavement for couple of miles each month to check on things mainly use the 4x4 in snow & when hunting.
I did jump straight into 4low when 4high wasn't engageing every thing seems to be working as it should for the moment hope it stays that way. if it happens again just like to know ware to start looking.
The shift motor on my '05 supercrew went out with about 30,000 miles on it. When it went, it went. I couldn't get it to go into 4L or 4H so I don't know if that could be it or not.
I exercise my 4x4 every week, 4L and 4H. From what I have read, the T-case shift motor can corrode inside and freeze up. so, i keep everything moving by exercising it weekly. All it takes is shifting into 4H below 20 mph for a less than an 1/8 mile. Then stopping, shift to neutral, engage 4 low and drive 20-30 feet. Drive in reverse for 20-30 feet also to lubricate the transfer case throughly.
Thats all I do, 94k, still on the same t-case motor
