Update, and a new question

So i figured out my voltage drain problem. And by that i mean i took it to my friend's shop and let him do it. So my truck starts every time i turn the key now, so thats a plus. My Fuel Gauge doesnt work...what are the usual suspects for that? i realize that it could be the sending unit. what else might it be? i dont wanna replace the sender if its a fuse box prob or something. Also, it turns out that my F100 might be an F250. Eight bolt hubs and super low gearing kinda say that it might be, as well as my mechanic. however, my VIN sez thats its an F100. The one on the title anyway. im on my way under my truck this weekend to check the frame VIN plate.
Anyway. She runs, shes alive, and she gets me to work. Victory!

Well.....What was the problem??????

Your's is another example of why I think decoding vins is worthless. My own F100 starts out F25.

I think there are some changes underway, but anyone with a title can piece together a truck in NC (finished or not) sell it, include the title and the new owner takes the title to either the DMV or one of the many subcontractor locations present it, with all of the blanks filled in, along with proof of insurance and get tags.

The problem was a bad alternator and starter solenoid. And as far as the VIN issue, in Texas its hard to register a vehicle if the VINs on the body and title dont match. i think. i know a guy who used to work the Auto Theft Task Force, so im gonna chat him up. i just dont wanna end up in a jam and have to get rid of my ride.

Peeps changed left doors due to damage, replacing them with used doors, and forgot to swap over the original Warranty Plate, which is riveted on.

When this occurs, it means the VIN on the Warranty Plate won't match the VIN on the registration.

The way it works here if the title and the frame don't match don't take it for an inspection You will not get it titled and the Highway Patrol may very well take it from You.
The warranty plate They don't care about. On the plus side the only time that You have to get an inspection is when You bring something from out of state.

i have never bought out of state, but in state you could have any car if it is older then 74 here in cali no one will look at it...i think bill is onto something, someone changed doors something happened and someone took the vin off the door and registered it as that and it is registered wrong....

or someone wanted to upgrade their 5 lug to 8 lug for some odd ball reason....

does the truck have a salvage title? someone could have taken 2 bad trucks and made one good one out of them, but only had a salvage title...

the last time this truck was apparently registered, according to the title, was 1979 by the Life Science Church of Hurst (anybody in DFW hear about them?). The title itself is clear, but i have a feeling its not right one. This truck feels more than a little bit heavier than a half-ton, what with the eight lug wheels, massive motor and low low low gearing. suppose ill have to go spelunking under the frame tomorrow....if that dude sold me a bad VIN or whatever im going to kick his ***, get my cash back, then get a salvage title. I think. Gotta talk to my guy in Auto Theft and see what he sez.

The VIN will be on the passenger side top of the frame beside the exhaust manifold. You can see it by opening the hood. Should be just ahead of the cross member.

Title search

I had VIN issues when I took my 70 F100 2wd cab off and replaced it with a 68 F250's cab. When I completed the switch. All I had to do was get in touch with a state inspector of trucks and autos to have them check the VIN from both titles to the body and the frame. If you don't have one of the titles, you can file for a lost title through your DMV.
