New guy with some quetions about buying a 7.3 diesel

I am thinking about buying a 2001 F250 lariat FX4 Diesel. It is a red crew cab short bed that has 174,000 miles on it. He has replaced calipers, rotors and lines along with a few other things. The truck is stock except for the tool box, nothing has been upgraded. He also has bigger tires with american racing rims on it. The purchase price will be $10500. I am just trying to get some opinions on if this is a good deal. The truck was used for light construction and the miles are mostly highway miles . I dont know to much about diesel trucks so any help would be great. Thanks, Rob

I posted in the wrong area.

Welcome to FTE stjoef250. The truck sounds priced ok to me, 7.3 is the one to have. I'm sure some experts will be replying soon with things to look and watch for. Just make sure that theres no blue smoke.

Welcome to FTE. I'd say the most important thing is to inspect the air intake closely. Make sure there are no broken tabs or clips on the air box. Next remove the lid over the filter and check for any signs of dirt or dust on the lid or inside the tube that heads back to the turbo. These areas should be clean. If there's enough dust there to leave clean spots when you wipe your finger across it, then consider having a mechanic check it out (might not be a bad idea anyway). Also remove the oil cap with the truck idling and see what kind of smoke comes out the fill pipe (blowby) If it's puffing, that's bad. Especially if there is any pressure behind it. If you see some smoke, that's ok.

Here are some more things to check https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...questions.html

Welcome to FTE! That sounds like a decent deal, do a NADA and look at a site like autotraderonline and see what prices are in your area. If you know anyone in your area that has any experience with the 7.3 maybe they would go with you to take a look. Sounds pretty good though.

I appreciate all the info. I am looking at it this weekend. This looks like a good site to be on. Not sure about the FX4 package but the truck does sit higher than most othe 4x4 diesels I have looked at. Again I appreciate the info.

That's typical for a Super Duty. I worked at a place with 3 guys that have Chevy 4x4s - 2 Crews & 1 Extra Cab. My truck sat almost a full foot taller then any of them. My front was 'leveled' by adding shackles to the front that brought it up about 2", but even measuring at the back, my truck sat that much taller.

Do us a favor please, and update your profile with a city & state. You'll got to that by finding the light-blue bar running horizontally across the screen when you're all the way at the top of a page. Look for "User CP" and click on it. On the new screen, there will be a blue menu bar running vertically with several options, one of them being "Edit Profile".

If we know where you live, there might a local expert that can go with you to look at it.

Welcome to FTE!!!
