This is a straight up aftermarket tail gate from JC Whitney. It will be made with sheet steel that is about .015 thinner then OEM. It will probably fit "OK" but not as well as OEM. It also doesn't have the "FORD" letters across the back. Just depends on what you're looking for in a finished product.
I made the mistake about 10 years ago of buying a replacement tailgate from JC Whitney. Fit poorly, wields seperated after a couple of years, poor quality. I recomend you pass it up.
I'm having a hell of time finding a tail gate. I'm getting ready to paint and I'd like to get one before I get paint. I know you can get one from JC Whitney, but I'm not looking for a thin peice of tin. Blue Oval also has one for just over $100. I'd like to get an OEM one that is in good shape. Mine was fine until a boat came off the hitch while I was driving down the raod and put a few real nice dents in it. I've searched the junk yards with no luck. Anyone know of a better place to find good tail gate?
I had the aftermarket one on my truck for a few years till I removed a big tree stump from my box and it warped it big time. It was ok with me though. It didn't have the ford letters and was thinner. Sorry don't know where to get a good one. I need one myself if you find will you let me know too.
I don't know all the details, but Jeff's Bronco graveyard has one or some in their 73-79 trucks closeouts/specials column, for $70. Maybe worth it to check them out?
I did buy a noname gate from obsolete in Ok City. It was cheap and if like Me Your ready for paint and have no gate have looked everywhere it will fill the hole. It's a piece of junk and I will be looking for a OEM. Trucks painted He's just finishing the polishing work it looks great I just can't let any heavy weights sit on My tail gate.
I'll try Jeff's Bronco Graveyard. Thanks for that. I'll let you know what I find. There has got to be a few good ones out there that don't cost a fortune. I saw one on DC last night, but it was almost $400. I know I can do better than that.
You're right. You do get what you pay for, but sometimes the hard work looking for something can be the cost. I looked at the gate on bronco graveyard and it looks like a cheap one that has some damage- that's why it's $70 bucks. I'm planning a full search of all the local salvage yards tomorrow. Maybe I can find something there.
Oh no, they are very different. Don't get confused, Jeff's Bronco Graveyard also deals with many of trucks also. His shop is about 5 miles from where I grew up and I have visited it a few times. He started out just dealing with the small 66-77 Broncos but then got into the 78-79 Broncos and since they are basically a short wheelbase F-150 with a different body he started caring parts that would fit the 73-79 pickups tool. After that the business just kept growing. He even worked with Chip Foose on Overhaulin to do a small Bronco. Pick up the phone and call them, they have always been most helpful.
I bought my gate from National Parts Depot and it turns out it was from Dennis Carpenter. It was a great fit, galvanized, and was pretty dam close to the same material thickness. DONT CHEAP OUT
I just found a great tailgate at a local salvage yard for $175. No rust and almost perfectly straight. The real miracle is the lack of rust since I live in the Seattle area. It's been used, but a little sanding and paint and it will be good as new. Now I have to get rid of my other two. One's got a few good dings and the other has some rust damage.
