M y friend has a '97 F150 with a 5.4L. I'm going to hook him up with a new muffler in place of the old one. What size is the stock muffler inlet pipe? It's either 2.5" or maybe 3" it's hard to tell just by looking at it. I just need confirmation on the size of the pipe. While I'm at it, I'm just going to pick up a muffler in the range of $25-$40. Any suggestions on a good sounding/quality muffler in this price range? Thanks!!
Excellent, thanks for the reassurance! A straight pipe can be too loud and excessive for a daily driven truck. A good sounding muffler will do the job though.
4 cats... Perhaps im overestimating the sound level of a straight pipe. I think ill just try that and see how he likes it. I could add a muffler later if its too loud for him. Can I literally run a straight pipe in place of the muffler? Right from the head pipe output to the tailpipe input, no bends necessary?
When I got my truck I wanted to get an exhaust put on.. but didnt have the money. So I was just going to put a flowmaster muffler in place of the stock one. But, I wanted to see what it sounded like with no muffler before I went to buy a Flowmaster.
I am glad I did, I saved myself $70. All I did was cut out the muffler and remove the rest of the tailpipe; I have had it that way for 25,000 miles and still like it. Trust me these trucks are an exception of how a straight piped truck is supposed to sound. Getting rid of the stock muffler and tailpipe was the best things I have done to my truck.
Also, when I took my muffler out I orginally just put a piece of pipe in place of the muffler. But it made it sound queiter and less aggresive, so I removed the tailpipe as well.
Cool, that sounds good. I had straight pipes on my '86 302 with no cats, and it was way too loud for daily driving. 4 cats would really quiet it down. I'll make a straight pipe with a 90* turn and make it exit with a nice chrome tip in front of the rear tire. Nascar style. He would be thrilled. He's been talking about a flowmaster dual system since I met him several months ago. He wont take initiative, and doesn't want to spend the money. I'm not going to tell him when I do it either. He's going to take his sister's/my girlfriend's explorer to work. Then he will come home and want to take his truck somewhere, start it up, and be thrilled!!
Yea dude I was checking out videos last night. I like the sound and the videos actually gave me further reassurance and motivation. I'm looking forward to the installation. Thanks for all the helpful advice!!!!
