05 Instrument Cluster Upgrade

I wanted to get an answer from any of you that care to answer. I am condisering a cluster upgrade to my XL truck. It has 4 wheel drive, column shift and will soon have cruise. My question is do I absolutely have to match the donor cluster from a 4x4? The dealer said I would but he was not real convincing.

you can take a Lariat inst. cluster and slap it into your truck. it will work.

the dealership will have to reprogram the mileage, and they will have to turn on the dash functions.

specifically, you will need the mileage, compass, temp, MPG thingy, trip counter turned on inside the PCM.

but yeah, do a search. alot of guys have done this exact same swap. and many posted part #'s.

oh yeah, you will need the Inst. Cluster from a column mount shifter truck...the floor shifter cluster will work, but you won't have the gear indication...just a sticker that says FX4, Lariat, King Ranch.

get a cluster that is the same style as your current one. IE: console shifter, or column shifter style

look at the XLT, FX4, Lariat clusters on eBay.

once you have the new one in your hands, remove the old cluster, install the new one and make sure to document your mileage (take a photo).

go to the dealership and have them turn on the functions in the PCM and correct your mileage

My apologies if I offended anyone...it was not my intent.

I have read the posts on this subject and understand what needs to be done. The dealer implied that it took much more to do the swap. He probably did not want to fool with it. I'll look for a 4x4 truck to make sure that it has a 4wd indicator or is there on all panels and it just not activated?

Thank you very much.
