Bad instrument cluster replacement

Ok guys, I'm having a hard time finding a straight answer for this. I have a 2007 f250 Lariat 6.0 diesel. My speedometer burned out the other day. Ford dealer says I need a new cluster which is fine with me, I just dont care for the price. If I buy a used cluster, can I change it myself. Does the trucks computer hold the mileage and engine hours or does the cluster have to be programed? Also, are there any security features that would prevent me from changing out the cluster myself?

Most clusters can be rebuilt --- there are specialized shops that do just that... see if there is one near you that you can walk it in.

I don't know for sure, but Ford exchanges your burnt out one for the new one, and transfers the data (mileage and whatever else).

You can change the cluster, but you got to have specialized tools to tweak the stored data.
