I have a '99 V10 SD that has developed a weird noise in colder temps. It almost sounds like some bearing is bad. At idle you can hear it but when i rev it up above 2000 rpms it seems to disappear. The part that confuses me is when i shut the truck off the noise continues for a second or two after the engine has stopped. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
Did you check the fan clutch? Sounds like it could be that rather than the motor itself.
Grab the blades at the top and see if you can move the assembly forwards and back.
Good luck!
Fan clutch, alternator, or A/C clutch! I don't know how your trucks all work, but for whatever reason my A/C clutch grabs at the wierdest times and changes the idle sound, not speed.
Pay attention when vehicle is cold and see if your bearing noise changes with the idle, these A/C things have a tendancy to go bad every now and then
Dont know if it's the same, but for what's its worth I had a real similar problem that the guys here helped me fix. Turns out it was the passenger side PCV valve rattling. Just pull it out and see if it stops the noise. They're pretty cheap to replace if it is. good luck. I know it sounds bizarre but that's what it was. Sounded like a bearing letting go.

Said PCV Valve... do they go bad? I got 143K on mine :/
Yeah they do. I had 139k when mine was making the noise. I think they only cost about 10 -15 bucks to replace but like i said, If you unplug it from the valve cover, you will know right away if that was the problem.
