Engine Noise
Engine Noise
I have a 2000 V10 that has some engine noise at cold startup and will quiet down after you let it warm up about 10 minutes. Bust once it sits there for 10 minutes and I drive off the ticking noise comes back when you step on the gas and then goes away, then comes back and goes away. If I floor it from 10 mph to 40 mph it will usually go away. Thank you in advance.
It sounds what is widely accepted to be "piston slap". It's common to the V10 and mine has done it, not bad, since I got it. Some mornings are worse than others and sometimes it doesn't make a sound.
Another thing, if it's just a tick, is the injectors, which is normal.
Is it a slight knock or a tick?

In the mornings, I've noticed that I have a tap too. It normally goes away when the engine heats up to normal temperature. I thought it might be a lifter/valve tap or a manifold exhaust leak? 99 v10 regular cab long bed
If it's a sort of a hollow, light knock, then it could be the piston slap noise - remember the wrist pin knock on the old FE engines? Sort of like that but not quite as definite and a little more hollow. It usually happens at startup after sitting all night, especially in cooler weather and when the oil is on the verge of needing changed, and usually goes away either on its own or after revving the engine. Hardly ever does it come back during the day (or trip, etc.)
The light tick could be an injector - which happens be okay, but some more pronounced than others.
Another tick could be the serpentine belt on its last leg or the idler pulley. In that case you can usually get a mechanics stethoscope (length of hose, piece of wood, or long screwdriver) and pinpoint it. You could also locate the ticking injector and/or the knock in the same way.

I Have A 2001 Excursion V10 With 51000 Miles. I Have The Same Problem During Cold Start Up. Slight Tapping Noise That Goes Away After A Few Minutes Of Driving Or Idle. Noise Comes Back After About A Half Hour Of Sitting While In A Store, Then Goes Away Again.
Once The Noise Is Gone I Can Step On The Gas And No Noise Under Full Acceleration. Engine Runs Great.
If Anyone Knows How To Get Rid Of Piston Slap Let Me Know.
I Use Mobile 1 Oil With Ford Filter.

If it is slap, the dealer most likely not render repairs. I had my 03 T/A LS1 borascoped for the same issue and we saw some cylinder scuffing. What the long term result will be who knows. If your concerned you may want to perform a IOL on the oil. look for high levels of specific metals, that may give you some leverage if you bring the report with you to the dealer. best of luck!

Determine, if you can, where it's coming from and describe the noise.
