in the never ending quest to lighten up and modernize my 79 F150 4x4, i would like to upgrade the AC with a later model smaller, lighter more efficent unit, and install a lighter nicer looking bracket as well.
the vehicle has a 'dealer installed" unit. bracket looks homemade.
any ideas?
I would suggest getting either a Vintage Air bracket and Sanden compressor (134 compressor), or get the factory York compressor bracket for the 351M/400 and then purchase a York to Sanden adapter bracket which is also available from Vintage air and others. I have the bracket for my old 351M. It will work on your 400, but I no longer have the lower pulley that attaches onto the crank - but since you have the dealer AC you should need this pulley. Let me know if your interested.
Here's a pics of my old Vintage Air set up and bracket. Don't know how this compares to your dealer installed unit.
that looks like what I need!
I will call vintage today!
does the new compressor work more efficent? I would asume it would.
Bet you get another 1 mpg better since shedding the weight of the ol dinasour compressor
It is slightly more efficient than York, especially off idle or at higher RPM. It's a rotary style compressor versus a piston type. At idle the York is probably more efficient. There's a ton of info on the vintage air site in their catalog (first few pages have a good explanation of AC systems). Good luck.
