e4od problems

i have a 96 f-250 4x4. when the trans gets hot it acts like it is slipping when in reverse. you have to give it a little extra gas to get it to take off going forward. after it takes off most of the time it shifts normally. the other times it shifts 1-2 then wont shift any further. when it trys to shift 2-3 it just seems to free wheel.the fluid was changed 3000 miles ago. the old fluid was not burnt smelling or dark. it did this once before the fluid change while towing my camper then started acting normal again. now it does it all the time when it gets hot. the od light does not blink at any time. would a code for the trans possibly be stored if the check engine light came on. any ideas or is it toast?

No replies....

This sounds like it's ready to break something big time if it hasn't already.

Do you know a good trans shop? The sooner the better.....

I can tell you from experience that the convertor is the weak link. Sounds like you need to make a trip to the trans shop to get a diagnosis.

It could be a shift solenoid, or a stuck valve, or a bad seal in the direct clutch. I can't see how it could be the torque converter.

the trans works perfect when cold. when it gets hot it doesnt want to back up unless you give it rev it up to about 2000 rpms. when you pull up to a stop sign if it is an incline it will roll backwards if you dont hold the brakes. if you give it just a little throttle it will stop rolling. it also shutters when you take off. it is a 96 model but it is a obd1 because it is over 8800 gvwr.

From this description it's an almost failed reverse clutch. Soon it won't back up at all.

it will back up fine when it is cold and the shuddering when you take off only happens when going forward. it just seems like all the clutchs work and are not burnt up. it just acts like there is a problem with the fluid going where it needs to or the preasure. all the shops say pull it out and we will look inside. i just wanted some info before i pulled it. if i go to the trouble to pull it it is going to get rebuilt or replaced.
