For those of you who have seen any of my posts in the past few days ive been having bad luck. I have been useing diesel out of drums for about 2-3 months now and its alot dirtier than I tought. I changed my fuel filter about a week ago and then it started "cackeling" alot so I took the filter out yesterday and cleaned it. I also found about 1.5in of dirt and crap in the bottom of the fuel filter houseing. I took it apart (took out heat element, post that filter sits on) and cleaned it real good. It immediatly started running alot better and my fuel economy was way up. Now its running just fine, still has good power and acceleration, but it idles real rough. The entire truck shakes at idle. What did I Fu** up?
so yesterday you cleaned the fuel filter? i'd say thats a big no-no, replace it with a new one immediately.
I knew I was going to get that. The filter was only a week old and all I did to clean it was put about half a gallon of diesel in a bucket and slosh the filter around in it. What negative effect can this cause?
the nagative effect would be its really not clean, your going to be putting small particles through your very expensive fuel system. run some sort of diesel additive for a couple of tanks like Bill mentioned above.
If you found dirt in the fuel bowl then you have dirt in the tank. Time to drop the tank do the hutch mod and clean out the fuel lines. I don't know what ill effects cleaning the fuel filter like that would do. Here is the site that tells you how to preform the hutch mod.

I know its not exactly clean, but being a week old I didnt figure it would be dirty enough to need replacing (although I was wrong, It was pretty bad.) I was planning on getting some diesel kleen today anyway, so hopefully that will help.
I would buy a couple extra fuel filters and change them out every couple tank fuls for the next 3-4 tanks short of dropping the tank and cleaning it out like Andrew said. Best to drop the tank IMHO.
I would still drop the tank but if it stops shaking then you might have a bad torque converter or a trans problem. Might want to look at the fluid level, smell it and even change it.
1.5" of crap in the bottom of the filter housing? WOW. I agree also on dropping the tank.
Drop and clean tank
Run the motor for a bit to flush the lines
Pull old filter out.
Clean the filter housing.
Check fuel pressure.
Dump in some diesel Kleen.

Of course.... Its only got about 20k on the rebuild so its about time for it to go out with my kinda luck....
