You know about the noise issue and reducing air in the fuel. This can theoretically extend the life of your fuel pump as a side benefit. The other advantage is it eliminates this
Those are the little screens in the mixing chamber that you somehow got lucky enough not to plug shut. If these get plugged up, it can starve you're engine of fuel which will greatly reduce your ability to go anywhere. Worst case they plug completely and leave you walking. Make sure you clean these out when you drop the tank.
You don't have to go with one of those big fancy filters. I've seen guys here run a small simple inline filter. They just have to be changed more often, but I would think they're less than $10 ea. Just make sure to use a filter that is rated for suction.
You might at least consider doing the harpoon mod where you trim the vent tube shorter, so if you happen to visit a fueling station (or if your pump is a high speed one) you can get more fuel in the tank before the pump shuts off. No cost on that mod as long as the tank is already down.
Once we've got things cleaned up (top priority at this point) we'll go back to your rough idle issue. For now, I'd keep running an extra dose of fuel additive to help the injectors. How old is this fuel in the barrels?
I got the tank down and it didnt look that bad but when I dumped it out I noticed alot more crap that what I saw in the tank at first. I think I am going to go head and do the mod. My biggest concern is how to clean the damn tank. Do I use any type of chemical? Do I just wipe it out with a rag the best I can? also, I had to cut the filler hose and the over flow hose for the filler, can these be purchased at a parts store?
One more thing.... You said that after I got it cleand "We'll re adress the rough idle" does that mean you dont think its from all of the crap in my fuel system? Also, in the mod guzzle replaced factory the pickup line with regular fuel line. Whats the point of this? why not just use the factory line and cut it near the new filter?

I don't know if you can purchase those at the parts store. If nothing else, check for a hose splice kit, which will just be a metal tube and some hose clamps that you can use to connect the cut hoses back together.
A rag will help in cleaning. If nothing else, just turn the tank upside down and use a pressure nozzle on the end of a garden hose to clean things out. Let it dry, then wipe it with a rag again. That should get it clean enough.
Cleaning the filter the way you did, we'll have to wait and see how the injectors react to whatever dirt might have gotten to them (or is still in the rails). Since you're deleting the screens in the mixing chamber (might as well take a look at those while you're at it, and if you do please post a pic for future reference), after the tank is done, make sure you clean the FPR as suggested so you know the fuel supply/return is in working order. Then we just have to wait and see how the truck acts.

You can use the stock fuel line from the tank, just replace the quick disconnect with a piece of diesel rated fuel line. Double clamp it at both ends. The quick disconnect at the back of the fuel pump is not like the others. Here is a diagram that shows how to release it.

Hopefully all will be well.
Cool, cool...... If I did get crap in the injectors what is the process going to be to get them clean?
Just finished with the mod to the sending unit and I took the two "cartridges" out of the mixing chamber and its amazing anything was getting through them. I, however, did put the screen that was on the bottom of the foot back on. I am paranoid that if I get a leaf or any big piece of trash it could clog the line. That screen seems to have big enough holes to let most stuff through anyway.
Any chance you could share a picture with us of what the screens look like?
The best thing to do for your injectors right now, is make sure they have fresh clean fuel & oil. Using a lubricity additive won't hurt. Now we'll just wait and see how it drives.
Have you checked the FPR too? Won't hurt to be on the safe side.
I looked at the FPR shims procedure link, but I didn't see where the filter (screen) is located ???
Also, thanks for the Geno's garage link - I just paid $48 for one at the dealership - I guess that is a $31 hat I'm getting!

There are no screens in the FPR, but it's possible to get debris hung up in the spring or check valve, which can cause reduced fuel pressure.

Ill see if I can borrow the girl friends cam and get some pics.....
Ford was the only option for the damn filler neck hose I cut and they wanted $374.00 for it. I ended up going to a parts place for heavy equipment and got some fuel injection hose that was big enough. Lets just say that getting that to stretch enough to go over the tank and filler neck was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. Its all back in and Im about to go pick up a baldwin filter to mount to the side of the frame.

They talking about the filter screen on the end of the pick up tube in the bottom of your tank..It's just a screen to catch the big stuff. (must drop the tank to check it.. or do the "tank mod" at the same time)
Here some info on the tank mod, with pics: http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/hutch.html
Ok guys, this is why I dont like doing stuff like the mod and I would rather just do the repair and put it back the way ford had it. I got it all back together, put 1/4 tank of gas in it, and it wont pump fuel. I put a baldwin screw on type filter before the pump. I tried turning the key to the run position and letting the pump run about 15 times. not a drop of fuel in the new filter or factory filter. Then I took the new filter off and filled it with diesel and tried about another ten times. Still no fuel being pumped. I am at a loss as to what to do here. I had jobs scheduled today and ive already missed two. I have to have this truck for work. Any ideas?
Im gonna ask a dumb question, but you extended the draw tube down close to the bottom of the tank per Hutch mod instructions right? Second question does the fuel pump create suction?? Maybe first I would ensure that there are no leaks in the line.
Summary
Fuel pick up is not in the fuel
Leak in the line between Pickup tube and pump (most likely in or out of filter

yes, I extended the tube just like the instructions said. I have tried priming the pump useing compressed air through the filler and also checked for air leaks when I did that. The fuel pump worked just fine before and its still comming on now.
