Wow if there was ever a public service message warning against using mysterious fuel in barrels...this is it.

Get that crap out of your fuel system...

Here is a link with pic's for removing the FPR .. (it for shimming reasons, but you could find it useful for cleaning)...I agree, it probably dirty..

I agree with hutch mod and dropping the tanks, there are screens in the tank that I'll bet are clogged up and you are not going to get them clean any other way

Wow. First I'd replace the fuel filter with a new one. Yes it's only a week old, but when you sloshed it around in a bucket of fuel, you moved the dirt from the side that supposed to catch the dirt, and deposited some of it on the part that's supposed to be clean. That means you're now sending dirt directly towards your $2,000 + (parts only) injectors. Compared to injectors, filters are cheap.

Next, I'd agree about cleaning the FPR and dropping the tank to clean that. If you don't do the in tank mods, you'll need to clean the screens in the mixing chamber.

Why didn't you pump the fuel out of the barrel through a filter? They make filters for this specific purpose that go inline with your pump. You've probably also got some water in the tank from condensation inside the barrels, so make sure you get that out too when you drop the tank.

I replaced the filter again yesterday. And yes, you are correct, I did have some water in it as well. I dont want to do the hutch mod but I think I may drop the tank and clean it out. I just bought a filter for my pump today so I should be good from here on out.

::UPDATE::

OK guys, I just pumped about 3/4 tank of diesel into my truck with the filter on the pump and the trash that was in the filter is enough to stop 3 trucks from running just after one use. Looks like im dropping the tank tonight. Im not going to do any mods unless someone can give me a REALLY good reason (ie better fuel economy etc). I will drop the tank and clean it out, clean out the fuel filter houseing, and clean the FPR. Should that do it? Also, how long do you think it will take to do all of this?

see my above post...it is cheap, I did if for 20 bucks and your truck will run better. I already had the external filter, and with you using suspect fuel it is recomended, the inline filter just protects your fuel pum though, and it has survived so far. I really like my truck with the hutch mod

Everyone keeps recommending it but no one really tells me why. I know it will reduce the noise that comes from air in the fuel system, but im not going to pay money and waste my time for noise. Whats the reason other than this to do the mod. Also, all of the external inline spin on filters I see online are over $150. I bought one today to go on my transfer pump in the shop at a local store for 40. Whats the dif in the filter you guys are talking about and the ones for transfer pumps.

Filter quality will vary, there should be some more reasonable filters around than 150 bones but I don't have my computer with it links to look it up. The benifits to the hutch mod are apparant when you read the article and write up posted earlier. It is all part of making your truck run a little better. Also no more in tank clogs, just a spin on filter that you pull and replace, and if you get the right filter it is cheaper and will prolong the life of your factor filter

edit: usually you are paying more originally for the filter mount

You know about the noise issue and reducing air in the fuel. This can theoretically extend the life of your fuel pump as a side benefit. The other advantage is it eliminates this

Those are the little screens in the mixing chamber that you somehow got lucky enough not to plug shut. If these get plugged up, it can starve you're engine of fuel which will greatly reduce your ability to go anywhere. Worst case they plug completely and leave you walking. Make sure you clean these out when you drop the tank.

You don't have to go with one of those big fancy filters. I've seen guys here run a small simple inline filter. They just have to be changed more often, but I would think they're less than $10 ea. Just make sure to use a filter that is rated for suction.

You might at least consider doing the harpoon mod where you trim the vent tube shorter, so if you happen to visit a fueling station (or if your pump is a high speed one) you can get more fuel in the tank before the pump shuts off. No cost on that mod as long as the tank is already down.

Once we've got things cleaned up (top priority at this point) we'll go back to your rough idle issue. For now, I'd keep running an extra dose of fuel additive to help the injectors. How old is this fuel in the barrels?

Here is the pre-pump filter I put in. It is see through so you can see how duty it is or if you are sucking any air. It had about 4,000 miles on it when I took this picture.

Thanks for posting that Robin. That's what I was thinking of.

Now futuresweets-10, you just need to compare the above 2 pictures and decide which you would rather have get plugged up if something happens in the future.

I guess you could make some sort of compromise and remove the screens from the mixing chamber and add the in-line filter without changing any of the other plumbing.

If you do the tank Mod, it will help keep the air of the fuel and extend the life of your injectors..(which are not cheap to replace)
