I recently purchased a 1976 ford 1/2 ton. I do not know much about engines let's get this out there. I was told it was a rebuilt 390, but the valve covers are aluminum finned and say Cobra Le Mans. What kind of motor is it. Anything to help me start to identify it would be great..
Pull spark plugs #1 & 4 ( front and rear pass side and rotate the crank to TDC on the damper. Then use a dowel or similar t insert into the cylinder via the spark plug hole marking each at the rim of the hole. Remove and use a ruler to measure the distance between marks (3.5" = 352/360) (3.75" = 390/427) (3.875" = 410/428) being absolutely sure requires bore confirmation. But the stroke will tell you which family your sporting.
Those are the more recent year offerings from FMS and other vendors. They are an aftermarket/over the counter item. Really no help there. Try the dowel measuring as Bobby suggested. That'll get you half way there. If you find the 3.78" stroke good chance it's a 390.
