engine removal tips

i'm planning on pulling my engine this winter and looking for any tips or write ups of things to look for a do to make it easier. Doing it cause i have some oil leaks for a while that will be easier to fix and mainly doing for fun/experience. Just wondering if there is any write ups on this or things i need to know before diving into this project. Thanks

Most of the guys around here tear down the whole front of the truck to remove the engine. I don't agree with that and have never done it (for engine removal). I think (depending on your shop access) it's easier to lift the cab. But like I said, depending on shop access, this may not be the route for you.

What kinda oil leaks?

I don't have the space to do a cab off and from looking at pictures it looks like taking the front off is prettty easy. What advantage do you gain by taking the cab off verse the front end? I have a turbo leak, think it is the EBPV actuator on the pedistal. And also a leak from the oil dip stick going into the pan. I have read about the kit from international to fix that but also read if you don't do it perfect you are screwed. Just thought more or less i would do it for fun and fix everything while it is out and easy to get at. I've pulled probably 10 engines out of cars and trucks, including my 5.4 f150 but never a diesel. Just thought maybe someone has done a write up on pulling the engine when they did theirs. I have the sevice manual on dvd and will look at that this weekend to see what i can learn from that but thought maybe someone has some real world experience they can share that means more than a book.

pull turbo, front clip, bumper (gains you a few extra inches), upper core support, radiator, IC, rotate the AC condenser out of your way, toward the passenger side (or get it discharged & remove it completely)...

trans bolts, TC bolts, motor mounts (from cross member), disconnect factory fuel lines (QD fittings on drivers side of engine cross member, PITA), belt, fan, alternator & AC accessory brackets (let the PS pump hang out in the eng comp't, drivers side)...

disconnect batteries, starter (let it hang from a coat hanger), eng wiring harness, grounds (front both sides & rear PS head)...might want to use a tranny jack to support the trans as you wiggle the engine forward & up...

ill be doing this real soon my self..

driver side battery only cause you want to take the air box out..why not hang the starter?? less wires to mess with..

Thanks for all the tips and links. will a normal 2 ton hoist work? i have a load leveler to. Does it come straight out or do you have to twist it and angle it just right to get it out? Thanks again

Dang, That is a wet dream shop. Nice and clean. I would tackle anything with a garage like that.
