Failed Inspection!

So I just had my truck inspected and it failed because of the lug nuts that were on it. I have the aluminum alcoa's from factory and the lug nuts are just standard steel tapered. They said they were the wrong kind for aluminum wheel and were unsafe cause they could back out, and I need the flat style with a washer. Does anyone know of a place to get the right lug nuts for my truck?

Not so fast. If it has the factory rims, with factory lugnuts, then the inspector is at fault. When you remove a lugnut, does the rim have a tapered hole? Are the lugnuts tapered to "seat" itself in the hole of the wheel? If the answer is yes to both questions, then don't do anything, except go to a tire shop or dealer and explain to them what happened. See if they will write up an explanation of your wheels. That should get you in good standing with the inspectors.

I assume the truck in your avitar is the one that failed the inspection. I have NEVER seen an F250 use the lugnuts with the washers. You don't start seeing those type of lugnuts until you get into the dually trucks.

Yes it is the one in the avatar that failed. I think I'll be taking it to the dealer and seeing what they have to say and get it in writing, then I'' take it to the inspectors, cause I already paid them for a failed inspection, so they should sticker it then...hopefully. Yes the wheels have a taper, and yes the lug nuts seet into them well. The inspection shop said eventually the lug nut would pull through without the "correct" lug nut on it.

No they won't. The lugnuts have a taper on them, and they probably should be a little bigger around at the base to give them a large contact area. I will admit, lugnuts for steel rims, won't work on aluminium rims. However, you probably can get away with using the aluminium style lugnuts on steel rims.

Read your post again, and yeah, you probably need some different lugnuts. I missed the part that said they were steel lugnuts. My above posts I think explains it well. The lugnuts you need are still tapered, not the ones with the washer on them.

The difference between these and the ones made for aluminium rims is the ones for the aluminium rims are a little bigger, giving them more surface contact. They are chrome lugnuts, usually a little bigger as far as what size socket fits them, and they have what may appear to be a washer on them, but it's not. They're a solid lugnut, that expands a little bit bigger than the flats on the lugnut, giving it the appearence of a washer. Hope that makes sense. TJ will chime in later. Can't post a picture. All I have is a 35mm camera. I'm still in the stone age. John
