I have been having toe and camber problems since the beginning of summer. Had three different places look at it and it never got any better. Their answer was always the same, "Everything is within spec, sir". Well yeah, but it's lifted and has oversize tires and they are wearing. Obviously they were missing something. So at work I'm talking with one of the lifted Dodge guys and I tell him about my problem and he tells me about this guy that he knows that works for National Tire & Battery that is an alignment wiz. I'm like, "No way is some guy from NTB working on my truck". My buddy stood firm and told me that this was THE guy to see.
So, I decided I'd take Susan's SUV down there for an alignment and see how he did. I mean hey, at least if he screwed up it wouldn't be on Jez and her $1100 a set tires.
I stuck around while he worked on Susan's car and mentioned my problem with the truck. He asked a bunch of questions and then told me flat out, "I can fix it". I told him about the other shop's failures and it didn't faze him.
Today I took Jezebel to him. He had it for two hours. His diagnosis? All parts good, and whoever aligned it last didn't have experience with lifted trucks (his opinion).
He rotated the tires, aligned it and gave it back to me. He used two different machines to check his work.
It drives like a dream. It's AMAZING.
Total charge = $89. For that he also saved the settings in the computer and gave me a copy of them for future use. Any alignments needed within a year are free.
So, for you Houston area guys with lifted trucks, Gregg at NTB in Conroe (the I-45 location) is the man to see.
Sorry for the long post but this is a problem that has been nagging me for a while and I'm excited that someone was finally able to fix it.
He did too. You could see his excitement and commitment to "get it right". I even called him once I got home to give him an atta boy. Also talked to the manager and told him to give him a raise.
My bets are that he gave the truck a little extra positive toe due to the larger tires (and I assume wheels with less backspacing) and their increased tendency to want to go negative (pull out at the front).
He did mention going positive on the toe. The thing that gets me is we are back to being able to drive her with one hand, no wandering at all. Before this, lots of corrections to keep straight at freeway speed. One other thing that I noticed is that he also took the time to get the steering wheel perfectly lined up with center, and I mean PERFECT.
I have a buddy up here that does amazing work with alignments too. He set up his own car by putting weights on the floor in the drivers seat to simulate him, and he would tweak it just perfect.
It could be a good idea to post up the measurements he had, possibly others with troubles could take those specs to their alignment shop, and ask them to match them? Just an idea? Glad to hear you got yours going straight again, and safely!
