almost finished with the resto on my 77 highboy and the time has come for the dreaded E-CHECK.I understand some 77's were catilyst and some weren't.Qustion;how do you tell?Or better yet how do they tell?Or even better;can they be fooled?!So far exhaust not installed.351M engine (temporary; 429 still on stand)I don't think vin# will help but will post if needed. Thanks Groundhawg
If you have the light duty 3/4 ton, you may have to have a cat & a pump. The heavy duty 3/4's and 1 tons usually didn't have none of that. The GVWR is stamped on the door tag, 7200 = light duty, 8600 & bigger = heavy duty.

Not what i wanted to here!Mine is 7200.Mine has the 1 ton rear springs but 3/4 ton front.Heavy duty rotors dayton caliper's. why the light GVW? Groundhawg
The 7200 # GVWR means the total vehicle weight, with one passenger and a full tank of fuel and a proper load (yeah right!)will weigh in at 7200 pounds. Even though you say you have the 1 ton springs in the back, you are still limited to the 9.5" differential. The 1 tons have a 10.25" gear. The EPA has set standards for vehicles capable of certain load capacities, therfore, they (EPA) figure that a Company (which pays more Federal taxes then an Individual)will opt for the 1 ton in most cases, therefore, give these Company's and Truck Manufacturer's a tiny break on emmision testings because they (EPA) make it up in taxes payed to the Government! The government also gets extra tax dollars from the additional fuel purchased for the heavier hauling trucks. Don't you just love it ! Tax this, tax that, tax them, tax you !
Phillip
Wow ! I lost my first train of thought after the EPA popped into my head.......lol. What I really wanted to finish up on was to just check with your State's DOTD to find out what you are obligated to have on your particular year/make model. All State's web sites are available by typing in: www.state.(initials).us/
Have you ever visited your own State's website recently ? Most have a pretty awesome site !

I have a 78 F-150 and it has a 400M, and the valve cover has a big sticker on it that says NON-CATALYST. From the research I have done, the break point for having/not having this sticker is 6000 LBS. So F-150 4x4's are over, but F-100 2wd's aren't. My truck has a big gas filler and no sticker stating "unleaded fuel only", which is another tip-off as to whether a car is emissions or not, and a third tip is to look for a heat shield for the converter under the truck. If your truck has no sticker (gas guage) and no heat shield, then its probably not an emissions truck.

The info above is for 75-78, I think starting in 79, the break went up to the 7200 lbs mentioned. This is due to the phase in of emissions requirements. The first couple of years, Ford could meet them without emissions, but after 79, they started to have to do more.
