How are you using your X? I have a 2005 also with 116,000 miles on it and the factory brakes are a long way from being used up.

X Hemi is right, from what everyone says the hawks are the way to go but I did oem ford pads.............but I have to ask (and I mean this in a nice way) why do you need brakes now you must have beating the **** out of the brakes. I just did mine at 49k and had a good 1/3 left on them and I think I've been hard on them???

I guess i should pull apart and check the brakes first. My dealer said they would be shot by 20000.

Good move...I changed mine out at 39K due to pulsating brake pedal...and the original OEM pads still had lots of meat on them...

But I changed mine out to Hawk LTS pads due to this being the second time the 'pulsation' returned...first time I had the rotors turned at ~24K...

This time I also had to install new rotors since I couldn't turn them again...based on what I have read on here...it seems that the shedding of the pad material can embed into the hot rotor surface and give you a rough rotor surface...i.e. pulsation. Which is a classic description of a warped rotor...but the theory on here is that the OEM pads shed more and cause the rotor surface to become more rough...don't know for sure...I'm in the beginning stages of my experiment (i.e. new Bendix rotors and Hawk LTS pads vs the Cryo rotors others have gone with and Hawk LTS pads I've got $160 total in my front brakes whereas 1 cryo rotor goes for ~$150)

If you have no indication of a warped type rotor (pulsation when braking)...I'd leave well enough alone if you inspect them and there is plenty of meat left...

Joe.

The only times I have noted pulsating in the brakes is when we have had long periods without rain. Water seems to remove the dust build up. Anyway, I just spray the rotor with wheel cleaner and after letting it set for a while I wash them off with water. Wheels are on the truck during this and pulsating goes away. Cheep brake job.

I figure I will get another 15K- 20K before a real brake job will be needed.

Check your local speed shop...I got mine from my local guy for the same price I could have bought them on-line for (after adding tax vs shipping)

Give your local shops a call. But make sure they are the LTS pads as I think Hawk makes two grades of pads for the Ex...don't simply assume that all Hawk pads for an Ex are the same...at least my shop lead me to believe there was at least one other type...

But there are numerous on-line suppliers you can buy from...others will point you in that direction I am sure...my point is to check your local guys too...

Good luck,
joe.

Joe - I read that other post when you first changed to Hawk LTS pads. And I have heard of a few X owners who spent the big bux for cryo-treated rotors, but still had the pulsating return several thousand miles later. I am very curious of what you've found thus far, and fully understand that you're still in the early stages of your experiment:
(1) How many miles have you gone so far?
(2) What percentage of those miles were spent towing?
(3) And what kind of sensations are you feeling from the brake pedal to date?
I'm sure others would like a mid-stream update as well.
Thanx! <Ken>

I changed my brakes upon returning from our long summer pull and only have had a few trips since then.

1) Thus far I have traveled about 2,000 miles
2) ~80% of those being towing miles.

That included a trip to Gatlinburg for the Ex rally and included Jellico Pass and the Smokies as well as some other local camping trips.

3) The brakes are still just as smooth as when I changed them although there is only 2,000 on the clock.

I've got one more local camping trip planned this coming weekend and then the Ex will be off duty until the snow flies and I only rack up about 500 miles in the winter.

So the in reality...time will have to wait until next summer when we get back into 'PULL' mode again. Next year will be the Adirondacks and Acadia National park...nothing like the Rockies...but still some pretty good hills.

Joe.
