Recommended torque for 223 manifold?

I'm replacing the manifolds on the 223 IL6 today. When I pulled it off the bolts were all the way from breaker bar tight to finger loose. Is there a recommended torque wrench setting for this installation? Thanks for any help.

Hi erinaldi,

Yes there is. Here is the procedure from the Shop Manual:

"To install the manifolds, fasten them together and tighten the nuts to 30-35 foot-pounds torque. Place the manifold on the engine block with new manifold gaskets (fig 7). Tighten the nuts to 25-30 foot-pounds tprque. Start at the center and work toward the ends to avoid manifold distortion."

Just FYI there is a warning about not removing the manifolds when hot - to avoid burns and warping.

Intake sleeves

Just a note here about some 223 intakes, when I repaced the gaskets on mine there were steel sleeves or inserts that fit between the intake and head if you have these don,t forget to put them back in. Becaefull not to crush them.I don,t know if all 223,s had these but mine did and the engine would not run with out them. Don,t ask me how I know! Mark

One of the two greatest things about this site are: 1) between the big number of folks who participate, we've probably done everything that can possibly be done on these trucks, made every mistake possible and fixed even the worst problems every where.

The other thing is between all of us we probably have one of the most complete technical libraries and collections of documentation (original, aftermarket, and new parts systems) that you will be able to find.

It's a great place to take advantage of those lessons learned and share yours as well.
