1997 Explorer power seat

my seat goes back, up, and down- but will not go forward. is this definitely the switch? or could it be a problem with the motor? hopefully I can just order the switch...and also- how does the panel that covers the switch come off?
TIA,
Charlie

Pull the connector off of the switch & connect your ohm meter between pins 5 & 2. Move the switch to forward. Got a closed circuit?

For comparison connect from pin 5 to pin 2 & move the switch to rearward.

See this post ( https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...m-removal.html ) for removing the plastic seat trim panel.

do these explorers/ mountaineers use the same motors to move the seat back AND forth? if so, one would assume that if mine goes back, but not forward- that it is the switch that is bad?

Yes, the explorer and mountaineer seat motors and controllers are the same.

right, but my question is "if the seat goes forward and NOT back, does that unequivically mean that the switch is bad and NOT the motor?"

No, it could be the motor (or even some scuffed/sharted wiring) but most likely the switch. Get the switch out and check it as 87XLT suggested above. That will diagnose the switch.

It's a reverse polarity thing. Just the one motor to move forward & back.

OOPS, my bad heres the correct info for testing the switch.

Remove the connector from the switch & connect your ohm meter to pin one (ground pin) & pin 2 of the switch.

Operate the switch in the "forward" direction. This should close the circuit.

Do the same between pin 1 & pin 8 & move the switch to the "rearward" direction. The circuit should close.

If not the switch is bad.

They should be marked. If I had a scanner I would post a picture from the EVTM.
