I'm sure this disscussion has been aired before....I'm on the road in Washington State and my Computer Chip from Diesel Chips of Texas may be dying on my Y2K F250 SD 4x4 6.8L.
The truck stalls intermittantly and the only way I can get her running again is to push hard on the under dash computer and sometimes even have to tapp on the computer box. I tried tightening the wireing harness bolt under the hood but that does not seem to help the intermittant computer motivated engine STALL!?!?!?!?!!?
I'm just about ready to disassmble the computer box and remove the Aftermarket Computer Chip?????
Any thoughts out there......I'm frustrated as I'm on the road on a lengthy road trip and the Computer seems to be giving me fits!?!??!
If I want to continue to improve power and overall driveability I sure want to stay with an AFTER MARKET COMPUTER FLASH.....Which way to go is my big question about now.....
-You experience anything like this before the chip was installed?
-Is the check engine light on?
-I doubt it is the chip it's shelf, some thing has to be loose or broken from making contact, the reason I think this is from what you stated above you pushed hard and taped the box to make it work so there's a gremlin.
-If the chip has failed you truck would not work, if it did it would be in limp home mode.
Appreciate your reply.
The Chip has been in since 2000. The intermittant issue has reared its ugly head a couple times before. I tried tightening the Harness Bolt and I tried improving the ground on the case of the Stock computer box. I checked to see if the Computer Chip was loose in the mount it sure doen't seem to be.....
I is a pretty big hassle to remove the chip while 1000 miles from home... but I'm thinking maybe I should try that!?!?!?
Still struggling with this problem. Any other ideas???
This my sound like it's from left field but it's worth shot, how does the relay look for the pcm? I hope some one else can chime in here and lend a hand cause I'am stumped on this one
I had a Superchips in my '96 t-bird that did the same thing - it was a heat-related failure. They replaced it free under the warranty, but still, it was a pain.
I would go ahead and pull the chip. The effort now will be less than if it goes ***** up in the middle of nowhere. If the chip is still good after the mfg. checks it out then you can always reinstall it. If its bad and you must get something else I recommend a programmer. I use a Superchips 1715 for my '01 6.8L. I think now I might get an Edge.
A "Chip" is old school and not done much anymore. I'd remove the chip and go with a reflash from an SCT or Diablosport tuner, preferable a custom tune. Those are the only two tuners worth spending $$$ on IMO, best bang for the buck, most features and flexability. Contact www.5startuning.com for an SCT tuner.
I'm gonna leave this KOA and the next stop I make I'll remove the chip and see how the truck acts then. Wonder if heat and the Chip could be a factor.....never seems related to a bump in the road or a vibration or acceleration or deceleration. Sounds like I'll be searching the suggested programmer sites.
Just in case anyone was following this thread. I did in fact remove the Performance Unlimited Chip that dated back to 2001 and the stalling and sputtering ceased......of course I did loose the performance tuning.
Now I think I will get the SCT X3 from 5 Star Tuning unless anyone thinks I should go another route after getting rid of the Old CHIP??????
