Drag link

hay all:

2000 F250 superduty 4x4

having some issues with bumping at around 32-34 MPH been checking a few things and noticed the drag link is easyly turned by hand. about 1/2 inch or so....

looks like at the pittman arm there is some play in the joint wondering if this is how it's suppose to be or not?

You will have some play in both. Most common place for the bumping noise is the drop links on the sway bar. I replaced mine a few years ago with poly bushings and no more bumpy bump. You can check by removing the drop links and swaybar and driving for a while and see if the bump goes away.

No you shouldn't be able to turn the links by hand, unless your 8' tall and green. Although it should create sloppy steering and not bump steer. Bump steer is typically changes in the geometry of the steering linkage that pushes the tires as the axle moves closer to the frame.

yeaaa I may have explaned it wrong.... it's a Vibration shaking type. and the steering wheel will get kind of bumpy....

We live out in the country a trip to town is about 60 miles. and to find someone to look at the truck I have to sit and wait all day...

It's JUST a PITA when we have problems and need someone to look at our stuff....

Thanks a million guys

Bad tires can cause those problems. Try rotating them and see if it changes anything. Does the vibration get better or worse with speed?

I have the same problem right now. Just ordered new inner tie rod and center link(the part that attaches the inner tie rod with the pitman arm) cause mine can turn by hand also. I also ordered new ball joints while i'm at it and new poly bushings. Also need new brakes so going to put power slots on while it's torn apart. Then new tires in about a month. Should ride like new after that stuff is done!

had the tries balanced and there new, rotaited them jjust for grins, it happens at 31-34 MPH other than that it drives and handles like a dream.

Ponch, keep me updated I would really like to know if you resolve the issue.

I will have to order the parts too.... being way out here in the sticks and all.

There is a vibration that is somewhat common to these trucks that usually occur around 40-45 mph. Some say it comes from the slip joint on the axle being dry, some say its from warped rotors, some say it comes from not proper torquing the lug nuts, some have other ideas. I had it at 42 mph for as long as I can remember. Replaced my rotors in the spring and haven't felt it since. Like I said, this usually happens around 40-45mph and felt most when coasting or maintaining speed, goes away with brakes or acceleration.
