Steering

This thread has been great and wish to thank all that have contributed. New question related to 1996 F250 4 wheel drive diesel. After inspecting the steering of this truck it has a bit too much looseness for my comfort level (drag link assembly). What I plan on doing is simply installing some new tie rods at the wheels and replacing the ball studs where the drag link connects to the pitman arm and replacing the ball studs which hold the drag link together. My question is I dont have to replace the actual drag link bars do I? Are the ball studs which fasten the link together replaceable and the same with the ball stud that fastens to the pitman arm? In my simple way of thinking I should be able to just replace the tie rod ends and the 2 ball studs holding the link together and pitman arm connection. I guess what Im asking is are the ball studs not removable from the drag link assembly? As you guys can tell Im what you classify as a weekend mechanic. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Maxx

No the ends are no serviceable so if you have a loose end then you need to replace the each tie rod it it connected to. Just unscrew from the adjusting collar and reinstall the new one

Thanks JT, I gotcha on the tie rod ends. My biggest question is at the pitman arm and where the bars are connected to each other. Are these ball studs replaceable or do you have to buy all new link bars? Thanks Maxx

Thats my bad fellas. I see now that the center link & drag link come with a ball joint installed. Sorry about the dumb question. Maxx

well if I remember correctly the pitman arm isn't a wearable item so it should just have a short tie rod end and a long tie rod that are attached together via the adjuster sleeve so each end (tie rod as a whole) can be replaced seperately. we need a diagram! that would make this alot easier!
