I reciently purchaced a 03 Super Duty equipted with the 5.4 auto 3.73 set up and I was wondering if anyone has simply removed the restricors and left it in the factory style T pipe? I was thinking about trying it as a quick fix but if it wont make any difference then i will make a Y pipe. So far I have removed the cat, replaced stock muffler with a turbo, and put a true flow filter in it. Any other suggestions for better mileage would be greeatly appreciated. Thanks, Ben
And I haven't found a bolt on y-pipe for the 5.4L. If you try it, I'd love to know how it works. It's one of the mods I'd like to try myself, but I am not so good at welding.
The Ebay y-pipe will work on the 5.4l and 6.8l however it isn't a bolt on. Cut and weld on.
You want exhaust to transition as smoothly as possible so a "T" is not good. Since you have the 5.4l you don't have to worry about flutter which the stock ypipe was designed to eliminate on the 6.8l only.
I ended up makeing one like the ebay y pipe i noticed a small gain but not sure if it was worth the hasle. But i did chew up a honda and spit it out on the highway. I am very impressed with the performance outa this truck so far though.
I've found a tonneau cover, gibson performance exhaust + cat delete, and a light foot is the best thing for mileage. The paddle mirrors are a helper too. Oh and iridium plugs seemed to make a great improvement!
I am currently running a custom exhaust, replaced Y pipe, no cat 3" turbo, did it all myself at work. Had a local mechanic I trust put a set of plugs in it and that helped with power not sure about mileage because someone reset my trip odometer at half tank. He put a set of Autolite Double Platinums in seem to help. I managed to find a like new topper cheap and had it painted white to match my truck. With my heavy foot i get about 10 in town. for cat delete you need a 3" pipe about 24" long swelled on both ends with clamps or welder if i remember right.
Hmmm.... so you got the ebay pipe and clamped it on? Did you just use some short pipes to splice it in place? Do you have any pics of it installed?
I'd like to install this pipe but I've been holding off since its weld-in.
Thanks,
Jason
I'm afraid to post pics of it - it's ugly
But it doesn't leak.
What I did was to take the y-pipe out of the vehicle, line up the new y-pipe, and cut VERY conservatively leaving lots of extra length on the downpipes. I was lucky, and got it just right.
On the straight section of the ebay y-pipe, I used a 2.5" extension, it's about 6 inches long. The inside diameter of 2.5" exhaust pipe was about the same size as the OUTSIDE diameter of the stock downpipes - which is not "regular" diameter - it's not 2.5 or 2.25, it's right in the middle, like 2 3/8", but not exactly. Nor is it a "normal" metric size either...
The downpipes are not angled the same way as stock anymore, but I did get them straight on from the header flanges, so it all worked out pretty good.
