blending oil weights

I have a gallon of 5W-30 syn amsoil left over. Wondering if its safe/wise to blend with a different weight of syn amsoil 10w-30/sae30? Secondly I have a 3/4 gallon of rotella syn 5w-40 I would like to use up can I / should I add this to the mix?

It probably won't hurt anything, but why not just use it up in your lawnmower or other equipment?

i wouldn't do it.....i believe that when you blend different weights of oil it causes it to foam up. at least i thought i heard that somewhere. plus our trucks don't run 5W-30 or 10W-30. hang on to your rotella 5W-40 and just use it each time you change your oil or use it when you may need to add a little bit. i always buy three gallons then just use the half gallon that i had left from the previous oil change. i don't wanna say how many quarts i put in cause that could start a! lets just say i put three and a half gallons in. lets see how many people can do math.....

I always do 14 quarts too, puts it just shy of the full mark on my dipstick.

Our trucks do run on 10W-30 Ford part # taken from the owners guide supplement is XO-10W-30-QSD.

I don't see a problem with blending. When you change from 15w40 to 10w40 syn. or 5w40 syn. I doubt very much we get every last drop out of the engine before putting in the new stuff. My owners manual also says 10w30 hd and 5w30hd. Use whats best for the climate in your area. Just because it's in the manual doesn't mean that's what's best for your engine. All vehicle manufaturer's care about is meeting emissions and mileage etc.Machinery Lubrication Magagzine - for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals

Three and 3/4 gallons is great, three and a half is less filling.

If I was buying it by the gallon jug I would probably use the 3 1/2 gallon/container technique also.

IMHO I would not be fiddling around with my 6.0 by dumping in a smorgasboard of left over weights and brands of oil.
There are lots of engines out there that take 4 quarts with a change and or/don't depend on the oil to operate their fuel injection systems.

I don't think it will hurt if they are all rated CI-4+ or CJ-4 and since winter is coming to Mn. the 5w30 should also be no problem. JMHO

i would have to agree with origcharger on this one. i am way too OCD to go mixing a plethora of weights of oil. i can see if you're using one weight of oil then switching to a different weight for the winter but going and mixing three or four different brands of oil and all different weights, no thank you i'll pass. but this is coming from the guy who waits for about twenty minutes after the oil as stopped dripping when i change it before i close the valve and start adding the new just to make sure that as much bad oil is out before i start putting the good oil in.

For me, 15 quarts puts it over the full mark by about 1/4".

After the 20 minutes give the truck a few shakes from side-to-side.... you will get more oil out!!..... it's what I do. You're not the only one who is OCD in this case!!

i changed the oil right after i bought it and then took it for a spin for about 50 miles then changed it again just cause i didn't know how often the previous owner changed it and what kind of oil they used. i have clean oil though

Ok , the comment was made tongue in cheek as a take off on the old "Tastes great" "Less filling" Miller Lite commercials.

No sense reviving the whole 14 vs. 15 qt. arguement again.
